What the Grant Offers
Each award is a one-time, non-renewable grant tailored to the individual needs and merits of the recipient. The amount is determined at the sole discretion of the Trustees and varies depending on the scope and impact of the proposed study or research.
- Payments within the UK are typically made via cheque in Sterling Pounds (GBP).
- International recipients receive funds through secure wire transfer, ensuring accessibility regardless of location.
While the grant is not intended to cover full program costs, it provides critical financial support that can be used for research expenses, living costs, equipment, or travel related to the approved project.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the Gen Foundation Grant, applicants must:
- Be actively enrolled in or accepted for postgraduate-level study or research (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent).
- Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or its recognized equivalent.
- Conduct work in the natural sciences, with a strong preference for food sciences and food technology (e.g., food chemistry, microbiology, engineering, nutrition science, agronomy, or related interdisciplinary fields).
- Demonstrate outstanding academic and professional excellence.
Important exclusions:
- Undergraduate studies
- Short-term training courses
- Conference or seminar attendance
- Thesis writing support only
- Applications not related to natural sciences/food sciences
Application Requirements
All applications must be completed in English and typed (handwritten forms will be rejected). A complete submission includes:

- Recent passport-sized photograph attached to the form.
- Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English.
- Two original, signed letters of reference from academic or professional referees. References may be written in English or Japanese and must be on official letterhead.
- Evidence of acceptance (or conditional acceptance) by a recognized university, research institute, or organization where the study/research will take place.
- All supporting documents must be submitted together—no partial or late additions will be accepted.
Incomplete or late applications will automatically be disqualified.
Selection Process
The evaluation is rigorous and merit-based:
- Initial shortlisting based on the strength of the written application, academic record, research proposal, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission.
- Interviews conducted by the Trustees (in person or online) for shortlisted candidates.
- Final decision made exclusively by the Trustees, with notifications sent shortly after the interview phase.
