Applications are officially open for the 2026/2027 Carnegie Mellon University Africa Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. This prestigious program identifies and supports exceptional young Africans who show outstanding academic promise, strong leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to serving their communities. Designed for students facing the greatest social and economic barriers, the program provides an opportunity to pursue Master of Science degrees in Information Technology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Engineering Artificial Intelligence.
Through this initiative, CMU-Africa and the Mastercard Foundation aim to equip African youth with the skills, networks, and resources needed to drive inclusive growth and meaningful change on the continent. Graduates of the program—known as Mastercard Foundation Scholars—often go on to become innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders who deliver impact in sectors critical to Africa’s development. The program is part of a broader ecosystem of 33 global partner institutions dedicated to nurturing Africa’s next generation of problem-solvers and community builders.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is designed for young Africans who have faced significant social and economic disadvantages. Applicants are expected to embody the following qualities:
