Applications open for the Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence Scheme

Applications are currently open for the Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) Scheme. This scheme, which is part of the Science, Industry and Translation programme, seeks to enhance the knowledge and awareness of cutting-edge industrial science, research, and innovation within UK universities.

The scheme offers opportunities for passionate and highly skilled industrial scientists and entrepreneurs to dedicate one day a week at a university to develop a tailored project that aims to:

expose university staff and students to advanced industrial research and development, as well as the scientific challenges encountered by the industry
provide support and expert guidance to foster innovation and facilitate the translation of research by universities
generate confidence and understanding of business and entrepreneurship among staff and students
give career recognition to the award recipients and assist in their professional growth
The scheme includes a contribution towards the basic salary for the EiR, as well as travel and project expenses.

Requirements

The scheme encompasses all fields of life and physical sciences, including engineering, but excludes clinical medicine.

It is open to applicants of any nationality who are eligible to work in the UK for the duration of the award. Candidates should possess a background in science and engineering and must demonstrate substantial experience in an industrial research environment, along with one or more of the following:

experience in managing collaborations between universities and businesses, as well as the translation and commercialization of research
experience in entrepreneurship, including company formation and growth, investment, etc.
experience or interest in training, coaching, or mentoring
Applicants may be employed full-time, part-time, or be self-employed.

Benefits

The EiR awards are granted for a duration of two years. The total value of the scheme can reach a maximum of £25,000 annually (including VAT where applicable), and is anticipated to encompass the following:

A salary equivalent to 0.2 FTE of the award holder’s current salary, allowing them to dedicate 20% of their working hours to the host organization. During the secondment, only the basic salary of the EiR will be disbursed; however, the EiR’s employer will maintain the payment of national insurance and pension contributions.

Travel and project expenses for the award holder to commute to and from their host, as well as accommodation if necessary. Additionally, project costs that facilitate the achievement of the project plan’s objectives may be included, along with expenses for conference participation, meeting workshops, and training.
