Applications open for the Amref Health Africa County Storytellers Roster
Amref Health Africa is inviting applications from talented Kenyan communicators to join its 2026 Amref Health Africa County Storytellers Roster. This exciting initiative aims to build a dynamic nationwide network of skilled writers, photographers, and digital content creators who will travel into communities to capture authentic, powerful stories of health transformation at county level.
Selected storytellers will work on a flexible, assignment-by-assignment basis throughout 2026, documenting real-life impact: the midwife saving lives in a remote village, the youth peer educator breaking HIV stigma, the community health promoter leading climate-resilient nutrition gardens, and the county-led innovations that are bringing quality care closer to the last mile. These stories will fuel Amref’s advocacy, fundraising, and knowledge-sharing efforts while amplifying the voices of ordinary Kenyans who are the true heroes of Africa’s health journey.
Scope of Work
Working closely with Amref’s county-based programme teams, County Storytellers will:
- Conduct in-depth field interviews with beneficiaries, frontline health workers, local leaders, and innovators.
- Shoot broadcast-quality photographs and short, compelling videos using smartphone or professional equipment.
- Craft engaging human-interest features, social media threads, and quick-impact reels that resonate with global and local audiences.
- Cover county-level launches, health campaigns, training sessions, and milestone events.
- Strictly adhere to Amref’s ethical guidelines on informed consent, child safeguarding, data protection, and dignity in storytelling.
Expected Deliverables per Assignment
- 600–1,000-word written success stories or case studies
- Sets of edited high-resolution photos plus raw files
- 30-second to 2-minute edited videos optimized for Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube
- Ready-to-post social media captions, quotes, and carousels
- Detailed field notes, signed consent forms, and metadata
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or diploma (or equivalent professional experience) in Journalism, Communication, Media Studies, Public Relations, Digital/Multimedia Production, Development Studies, or Public/Community Health with proven writing ability.
- Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on experience in storytelling, print or digital journalism, development communication, community reporting, or content creation.
- Strong interviewing skills and ability to translate complex health topics into accessible, emotionally powerful narratives.
Added Advantages
- Previous work documenting health, WASH, or community development programmes
- Proficiency in photo and video editing (Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, CapCut, Canva, etc.)
- Fluency in Swahili and/or local languages spoken in your county
- Existing press accreditation or membership of Kenyan media associations
Duration and Engagement Model
Successful applicants will be onboarded to a one-year renewable roster (January–December 2026). Assignments will be offered based on geographic proximity, skill match, and project needs, with competitive daily rates and travel reimbursement provided.
