OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World
The OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World are currently accepting applications.
To be eligible, the candidate must be a female scientist who obtained her PhD in a scientific field in the last decade and is conducting research related to inclusive health.
In the upcoming years from 2022 to 2026, the awards will align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Therefore, applicants need to showcase how their work contributes to advancing knowledge in inclusive health and supports SDG3 (Good health and well-being).
These awards are specifically for women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Women in Social sciences, Humanities, Arts, or other disciplines are not eligible to apply.

- Agricultural Sciences
- Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences
- Biological Systems and Organisms
- Chemical Sciences
- Computing and Information Technology
- Engineering Sciences
- Mathematical Sciences
- Medical and Health Sciences (including Neurosciences)
- Physics
- Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology
1. Any combination of these disciplines, denoting interdisciplinarity, is permissible.
Furthermore, the applicant is required to have resided and worked for a minimum of 5 out of the last 15 years in one of the 66 scientifically and technologically lagging countries (STLCs) enumerated below:
Africa: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
Arab Region: Djibouti, Palestine (West Bank & Gaza Strip), Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Yemen.
Prize – OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World
- A cash award of USD 5,000.
- An all-expenses-paid trip to participate in a relevant international conference.
- The five awards will be allocated as follows: one for each of the four regions of the developing world (Africa, Arab region, Asia & the Pacific, and Latin America & the Caribbean), along with an additional “floating” award for an exceptional candidate from any of these regions.

Applications for the 2025 awards are sought from women scientists who have made notable contributions in the field of inclusive health, with research aligned to SDG3 (Good health and well-being), and who have lived and worked for at least 5 years in an eligible STLC.
Applications must be submitted online, in English, and should include:
Official documentation verifying 5 years of residency in an eligible STLC.
The following documents may serve as proof of residence, provided the applicant’s name (as indicated in the online form) is clearly visible: a statement from the local police office or municipality, population registry office, rental agreement, utility bills, or employment contract. 1. Documentation demonstrating how your research contributes to the advancement of SDG3 (Good Health and Well-Being) is required.
A motivational statement, not exceeding 2500 characters, should articulate your qualifications for this award, highlighting the exceptional quality of your research, significant milestones in your scientific career, and the impact of your work at local, regional, and international levels. Additionally, please address any personal or professional challenges you have encountered and successfully navigated within your context. It is advisable to prepare this statement in advance for ease of submission.

– A minimum of two reference letters, which must be prepared on official letterhead and authored by senior scientists who are well-acquainted with your research.
