Entries open for the UNDP Tax for SDGs Undergraduate Essay Competition

The 2024 UNDP Tax for SDGs Undergraduate Essay Competition is now accepting applications. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is committed to enhancing awareness and fostering innovative ideas to facilitate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Tax for SDGs Initiative is instrumental in this endeavor, emphasizing the role of effective taxation in financing sustainable development.

In this context, UNDP Nigeria is pleased to announce the launch of an Undergraduate Essay Competition. This initiative invites students to articulate their perspectives and propose solutions regarding how tax policies can advance the SDGs in Nigeria. The most outstanding essays will be transformed into policy briefs.

Theme – UNDP Tax for SDGs Undergraduate Essay Competition

Participants are encouraged to focus on one of the following thematic areas:

1. Investigating the potential of Innovative Tax Policies and Strategies to promote sustainable development and address the SDGs financing gap in Nigeria.
2. Examining the connections between inclusive and sustainable tax systems, environmental sustainability, the digital economy, and trade.
3. Enhancing tax systems to mitigate Illicit Financial Flows in Nigeria, contributing to the closure of the SDGs financing gap.

Eligibility – UNDP Tax for SDGs Undergraduate Essay Competition

The competition is open to all undergraduate students from Nigeria, regardless of their field of study, who are currently enrolled in an accredited university or college within the country.

Participants must provide a national identification card and their university identification.

Submission Guidelines

– Essay Length: Submissions should range from 1,500 to 2,000 words.
– Language: Essays must be written in English.
– Format: All essays should be typed, double-spaced, and submitted in PDF format.
– Originality: Submissions must be original and not previously published. Any form of plagiarism will lead to disqualification. The use of AI is prohibited.
– Deadline: All entries must be submitted by 1 October 2024.

Awards and Recognition – UNDP Tax for SDGs Undergraduate Essay Competition

First Place: NGN 1,000,000 along with a certificate of achievement.
Second Place: NGN 750,000 accompanied by a certificate of achievement.
Third Place: NGN 500,000 together with a certificate of achievement.
Launch Date: 28 August 2024
Submission Deadline: 1 October 2024
Announcement of Winners: 29 October 2024
Consolation prizes will be awarded to other notable entries.
