Call for Applications for the USAID Climate Finance for Development Accelerator ($250 million initiative)
The USAID Climate Finance for Development Accelerator (CFDA), also referred to as “the Accelerator,” is a $250 million initiative aimed at generating $2.5 billion in public and private climate investments by 2030. These investments will support various activities related to climate change mitigation and adaptation, with a focus on promoting the transition to an equitable and resilient net-zero economy.
The Accelerator serves as a platform that assists countries in fulfilling their national commitments in line with the Paris Agreement. It achieves this by offering evidence-based solutions tailored to each country’s specific circumstances and addressing gaps in global, regional, and national climate finance systems. The Accelerator revolves around three key objectives, all of which aim to mobilize financial resources for climate adaptation and mitigation in an inclusive and equitable manner:
Objective 1: Foster the development and expansion of effective partnerships and innovative investment solutions to drive transformative change in countries where USAID operates.
Objective 2: Enhance the enabling environment for climate finance, encouraging greater participation from a diverse range of stakeholders who are actively involved in driving climate solutions.
Objective 3: Strengthen local and global capacity to attract additional resources into climate finance.
The Accelerator provides key features such as:
1. Creating a partnership portal for private sector, foundations, and other interested partners to access catalytic support for climate investments aligned with USAID objectives and Paris Agreement commitments by joining the Accelerator-managed Climate Finance Investment Network (CFIN).
2. Engaging partners through the CFIN to enhance the climate finance ecosystem, attracting private sector financing through learning, partnership facilitation, and catalytic grants.
3. Assisting USAID missions and local partners in developing evidence-based solutions to address gaps and barriers in local climate finance ecosystems that hinder the deployment of increased and more effective climate finance.
4. Empowering local actors, marginalized communities, and underrepresented groups to access climate finance and take the lead in achieving climate goals through co-creation, partnership matchmaking, and support to become direct recipients of USAID subcontracts and grants.
