Call for Application: Charles R. Wall Conservation Leadership and Management Fellowship 2024 Cohort

The Charles R. Wall Conservation Leadership and Management Fellowship is a unique and intensive program designed for young African professionals in the conservation sector. Led by the African Wildlife Foundation, this 9-month fellowship brings together individuals from various backgrounds, including business, NGOs, public sector, and community-based organizations, who are passionate about making a positive impact in the environment.

During the fellowship, participants will be equipped with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge to lead systemic change in conservation. This transformative experience will not only ignite their passion but also help them discover their true leadership potential and purpose. They will have the opportunity to delve into their own values and explore who they are as individuals, all with the aim of creating meaningful change and impact.

Furthermore, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the state of conservation across different regions, with a particular focus on the challenges faced in Africa. They will be part of a close-knit community of 15 young professionals, each bringing their unique expertise and perspectives on environmental matters.

The learning Journey

• The learning journey of this fellowship is highly experiential and blends various learning formats.
• Participants will engage in leadership development workshops, intentional networking activities, and hands-on learning experiences, including a placement in a conservation organization.
• These sessions will be conducted on a monthly basis, with personal development sessions in between, all facilitated by a faculty of experts and practitioners in the field.
• Overall, the Charles R. Wall Conservation Leadership and Management Fellowship offers a transformative experience for young African professionals, empowering them to become effective leaders in the conservation sector and drive systemic impact.

Eligibility

We are currently in search of dynamic young African leaders and professionals in the field of environment who possess the following qualities:

1. Interest: A demonstrated passion for conservation and environmental sustainability.
2. Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience working in the environmental sector. This can include employment, freelance work, volunteering, or even founding an organization. Areas of expertise can range from conservation biology, enterprise development, tourism, communications, human resources, finance, community development, and more.
3. Empowering communities: A proven commitment to supporting the communities in which you live or work.
4. Creativity & Innovation: Proven skills in creativity to make meaningful contributions in your field of work.
5. African background: You must be an African citizen living and working in an African country.
6. Age: Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 35.
7. Academic qualification: A minimum of a diploma in any field. However, applicants with exceptional experience may still be considered, regardless of their academic qualifications.
8. Managerial experience: The ability to demonstrate strong management skills.
9. Language: Proficiency in the English language is required. While the training is open to candidates from francophone countries, basic English writing and speaking skills are necessary. Some training materials and sessions may be translated into French.

Appliation

• The selection process for a Chuck Wall Fellow typically lasts a minimum of three months, starting from the application deadline until the shortlisting of applicants for the Fellowship. Below is an overview of the application and selection process.
• Applications will remain open until 17:00 PM EAT on the 3rd of February 2023. It is important to ensure that all required supporting documents, such as a Curriculum Vitae and a letter of recommendation from a university/employer/senior person you have worked with, are submitted along with the application.
• The application also includes mandatory essays, and incomplete applications will not be taken into consideration.
• Preference will be given to individuals working in institutions such as the government, NGOs, CSOs, corporate entities, or enterprises. While priority will be given to institutionalized youth, exceptional and promising applicants who are not affiliated with any institutions will not be disqualified.
