The ACCEL Africa Project Training Program for Journalists 2024 is currently accepting applications. Journalists are encouraged to apply for this free training program, which aims to provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to report on child labor in African supply chains effectively. The ultimate goal is to increase awareness about child labor issues and garner support from the public and policymakers to eradicate this critical problem.

The second phase of the ACCEL Africa Project is leading the global effort to eliminate child labor from supply chains, especially in Africa. Building on insights gained from the first phase, the project is strategically positioned to tackle the root causes of child labor in selected countries and key supply chains like tea and coffee, as well as the broader rural economy.

Targeted interventions are planned for Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, and Uganda. Following a systems-based approach, the project aims to strengthen mechanisms and frameworks crucial for addressing the underlying issues that fuel child labor. As part of this strategy, training for journalists on combating child labor is considered a vital element directly linked to Output 3.4 of the Project. Information on child labor in African supply chains is gathered and shared with a wider audience, including journalists and media professionals, to enhance their capacity to report on child labor issues regularly.

This training seeks to utilize the media’s influential role in society to shed light on the complexities of child labor and garner public and policy-level support for its eradication. By providing journalists with the necessary skills, knowledge, and ethical guidelines for reporting on child labor, the initiative aims to amplify the project’s goals and contribute to the broader objective of eliminating child labor in supply chains across Africa.

Requirements for the ACCEL Africa Project Training Program for Journalists

1. Applicants must be active journalists, media practitioners, or journalism students in Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, or Egypt.
2. Preference will be given to journalists with a background in reporting on human rights, social issues, or specific supply chains like gold, cotton, coffee, cocoa, or tea.
3. Currently living and working in one of the specified countries.
4. Special consideration for candidates reporting from rural or vulnerable areas within these nations.
5. Demonstrated interest or previous experience in child labor, human rights, or social justice.
6. Readiness to participate in advocacy and public awareness initiatives after completing the training.

2. After completing the application, send your CV to [email protected] with the subject line “COUNTRY – NAME and LASTNAME– Voices against child labour.”
3. Additionally, include a 1-page motivation statement explaining your interest in the training and how it aligns with your professional goals.
4. Develop a first-person story of a real case of child labour, along with 1-3 photos of the story subject, and a signed consent form for each subject portrait.
5. Also, include a 1-page description of the story highlighting the context, challenge, and solution.
6. Lastly, provide a letter of recommendation from a current employer or professional peer.
