Apply for the NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge (N3.5 million Prizes)

The NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge (TIEC) is designed to foster student-led clean energy innovations, raise awareness, and encourage investments within higher education institutions in Nigeria. Established in 2023 through a collaboration between NEF and sponsored by All On, an impact investment firm, TIEC2024 will bring together impactful energy innovations developed by student teams from tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Selected teams will have the opportunity to present their ideas in person or through a hybrid format at the 9th Nigeria Energy Forum at Marcellina Centre, Along Radisson Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Nigeria. Winning teams will receive a portion of the over 3 million Naira prize pool.

The key themes for NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge include:

  • (i) Powering Agribusiness;
  • (ii) Energizing Healthcare;
  • (iii) Local Manufacturing; and
  • (iv) Cleaner Production.

General Information: NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge

Stage 1: Submit Pitch Deck (with maximum 7 slides) to outline idea, problem statement, innovation potential and impact;
Stage 2: Shortlisted entries invited to present a Poster to illustrate concept, technical design, delivery plan and cost/benefit analysis at NEF2023 Day 1;
Stage 3: Finalists invited to submit 90seconds video pitch to summarize innovation

Prizes: NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge

  1. A share of 3.5 million Naira grants to be awarded to winning teams to pilot/upscale project prototype. 1.5M First Prize; 1.1M 2nd Prize & 0.9M 3rd Prize.
  2. At least 2 student representatives (comprising at least 1 woman and 1man) of each shortlisted teams MUST be accompanied by 1 faculty staff member; and will be offered complimentary registration,
  3. Hotel accommodation & travel/logistics support; to fully participate in NEF2024 technical, training, networking, capacity building sessions, and Live Pitch Finals to be held on Tues. 9th July 2024 in Lagos.

Eligibility for the NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge

1. Undergraduate and masters students enrolled in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, such as universities, polytechnics, technical colleges, and other degree-awarding institutions, are required to form teams.
2. Collaboration and innovation are promoted by allowing teams to be formed across different departments or faculties within an institution.
3. It is mandatory for a faculty or institutional staff member to mentor student teams, with encouragement for student chapters of professional institutions like IEEE, NiMechE, NSE, and others to participate.
4. Gender equity and balance in team composition is strongly recommended and must be maintained throughout all project stages, from ideation to delivery.
5. Former TIEC Winners are urged to become ambassadors, spreading awareness about the opportunity in their region and mentoring new teams instead of resubmitting previous entries.

Key Dates: NEF Tertiary Institutions Energy Pitch Challenge

7th May 2024 – Stage 1: Submit Pitch Deck (with a maximum of 7 slides) to outline the idea, problem statement, proposed innovation solution; cost-benefit analysis; team composition, and impact.
9th June 2024 – Notification of Shortlist entries to proceed to Stage 2 & Stage 3;
17th June 2024 – Stage 2: Shortlisted entries submit a 1-page Poster to illustrate the concept, technical design, delivery plan, & cost/benefit analysis. Upload a 1-minute Pitch video by the team on social media.
8th-9th July. 2024 – Stage 3: Arrival in Lagos; Poster Presentation; Live Pitch Finals & Awards at NEF2024
21st Nov. 2024 – Winners to submit 120-seconds video & present highlights of progress & grant impact.
