Apply for the Media Challenge Fellowship Programme for Journalists and Media Students

The Media Challenge Initiative is currently accepting applications for its Media Challenge Fellowship Program from journalism and media training institutions. This fellowship program aims to provide selected applicants with the necessary time and resources to engage in intensive practical training, transforming them into versatile and skilled journalists.

The Media Challenge Fellowship Program is a highly competitive multimedia journalism training program that is awarded to the most outstanding journalism students from the Inter-University Media Challenge. This challenge is a practical reporting competition held in 14 universities across Uganda.

This fellowship program is an integral part of the Media Challenge Initiative’s strategic vision to cultivate the next generation of journalists who possess not only a wide range of skills but also the ability to act as catalysts for change within their communities. By combating high rates of youth unemployment, this program empowers young journalists to enhance the quality and impact of the media, ultimately contributing to the improvement of democratic processes. The program encourages critical and investigative reporting that holds government and institutions accountable.

Structure

The structure of the MCI Fellowship includes 25 days of comprehensive multimedia journalism training, covering topics such as foundational skills, multimedia techniques, participatory youth radio training, beats reporting, career guidance, media entrepreneurship, data journalism, and digital skills. Additionally, each fellow is paired with a professional mentor from the media industry through the Media Mentorship Program, providing ongoing guidance throughout a year-long program.

Eligibility

• To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must be journalism and media students.
• Participants in the Inter-University Media Challenge and expo competitions have an added advantage.
