Applications open for the SAIIA Africa Youth Portal and Research Programme
The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) is thrilled to announce the opening of applications for the 2026 SAIIA Africa Youth Portal and Research Programme – a flagship initiative that marks the exciting relaunch of the continent’s premier online platform for youth-led policy research. Rebranded as the Africa Youth Portal, this revitalized digital hub will become the go-to space where young African thinkers publish sharp, evidence-based commentary that influences decision-makers across governments, regional bodies, and international organizations.
This fully funded programme will select 20 outstanding postgraduate researchers from across Africa for an intensive, career-shaping journey that bridges the gap between university halls and the world of policy influence. The centrepiece is a week-long residential training workshop titled “From Academia to the Think Tank: A Young Researcher’s Journey”, scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 20–25 April 2026 (exact dates to be confirmed). All travel, accommodation, meals, and training costs will be fully covered by SAIIA.

Who Should Apply?
SAIIA is looking for Africa’s brightest young minds who are ready to move from campus to continent-wide influence. You are eligible if you:
- Are aged 18–35
- Are currently enrolled in or have recently completed a postgraduate degree (Honours, Master’s, or PhD)
- Studied or are studying: International Relations, Political Science, Economics, Law, Development Studies, Journalism, Sociology, Environmental Science, Foresight Studies, or related disciplines
- Have a demonstrated passion for policy research and Africa’s development challenges
- Can commit to the full Johannesburg workshop (20–25 April 2026) and subsequent mentorship phases
- Are ready to produce a publishable policy piece by the end of the programme
