Applications open for the One Young World Hauwa Ojeifo Scholarship
Applications are currently open for the 2025 One Young World Hauwa Ojeifo Scholarship. The Hauwa Ojeifo Scholarship was established to empower young leaders dedicated to addressing the pressing and interconnected challenges that women and girls face today. This scholarship provides emerging changemakers with the necessary tools, knowledge, and global platform to initiate transformative actions. By supporting passionate young leaders who confront issues such as child marriage, gender-based violence, and disability rights, the Hauwa Ojeifo Scholarship seeks to cultivate a new generation of empathetic, courageous, and visionary leaders striving for a more just, inclusive, and equitable world for everyone.
Following her diagnosis of bipolar disorder and PTSD, Hauwa founded She Writes Woman, an award-winning initiative that amplifies the voices of mental health and psychosocial disabilities in Nigeria by empowering individuals with lived experiences to share their narratives.
To assist those with mental health conditions and disabilities, Hauwa has set up a 24/7 Toll-free Helpline that anyone in Nigeria can contact to speak with a trained counselor. In addition, she has created an online community comprising over 2,000 mental health advocates and individuals living with mental health conditions. Members can connect, share their experiences, and access accurate knowledge and information regarding mental health.
In 2024, Hauwa was chosen by Melinda French Gates as one of twelve leaders to receive a $20 million fund aimed at supporting charitable organizations that are making a significant impact on improving women’s health and well-being.
Requirements – One Young World Hauwa Ojeifo Scholarship
- Young leaders aged between 18 – 30* who:
- Are currently leading or holding a leadership position in an organization or initiative that has demonstrated impact in a field related to at least one of the following themes:
- Mental Health, including neurodivergence and developmental differences.
- Domestic & Sexual Violence.
- Disability Rights & the rights of older individuals.
- Gynecological Health & Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights.
- Maternal and Child Health.
- Issues concerning the Girl Child (FGM, Child-Adolescent Pregnancy & Child Marriage).
- Non-Communicable Diseases.
While this opportunity aims to support projects addressing any of the aforementioned issues, One Young World is especially interested in connecting with organizations that incorporate psychosocial support and a disability-inclusive perspective in their programming.
Reside and create an impact in Africa, Asia, or the Middle East.
Most delegates fall within the age range of 18 to 30. The One Young World team will consider applications from individuals older than 30, provided they can demonstrate significant personal impact, initiative, and a commitment to engagement.
