Applications open for the Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for Scientific Discovery and Technological Innovation ($5,000 award)
The African Academy of Sciences is excited to announce the opening of applications for the 2024 Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for Scientific Discovery and/or Technological Innovation. This prestigious award aims to recognize and celebrate African scientists who have made exceptional contributions to scientific discovery or technological innovation.
The AAS is dedicated to cultivating a thriving scientific community in Africa and encouraging a culture of innovation and discovery that can drive socio-economic progress across the continent.
The Olusegun Obasanjo Prize is presented biennially to individuals or groups of scientists who have demonstrated remarkable achievements in scientific research or technological advancements that have a positive impact on Africa’s development. These breakthroughs may stem from cutting-edge research in academic institutions or be rooted in traditional knowledge systems.
The International Prize Committee is responsible for selecting the recipient of the Olusegun Obasanjo Prize through a rigorous evaluation process to ensure that the awardees have made significant contributions to scientific or technological progress. These advancements should contribute to sustainable development, natural resource management, and environmental protection at a national or regional level.

- The Olusegun Obasanjo Prize will be awarded in the fields of:
- Biotechnology,
- Energy,
- Information and Communication Technologies,
- Material Sciences.
Eligibility Criteria: Olusegun Obasanjo Prize for Scientific Discovery and Technological Innovation.
The International Prize Committee has a primary criterion that the nominee(s) must be evaluated based on their merit and achievement. In addition, there are other criteria that must be met:
1. The nominee(s) should be actively involved in the scientific or technological field in which they have made a noticeable contribution.
2. The nominee’s work should either already be patented or have the potential to lead to a patent.
3. The nominee’s work should have a multiplier effect.
The Prize is open to all African scientists and technologists, without any discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, or geographical location. However, national scientists and Fellows who are employed by or serve as senior advisors to the AAS are not eligible for nomination. Additionally, current members of the governing organs of the AAS are also not eligible for the award.

- The Prize is awarded every two years and consists of four components:
- 1. A cash award of US$5,000 (subject to review and adjustment by the Governing Council of the AAS).
- 2. An Inscribed Gold Medal.
- 3. A Citation in the form of a certificate.
- 4. Election into AAS Fellowship.
- 5. The Prize can be awarded to an individual or jointly to two or more persons who will share the cash award equally.
