Applications Open for The African Union Civic Tech Fund 2.0 (grants of up to €15,000)
The African Union Commission (AUC) is pleased to announce the launch of the second Grant Call for civic tech innovations in Africa, with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). The Grant process is overseen by the Civic Tech Innovation Network (CTIN) and Ushahidi, who are continental partners. The African Union Civic Tech Fund aims to support initiatives that enhance citizen engagement through the innovative use of data and digital technologies, particularly those led by or relevant to youth. These initiatives should provide targeted civic technology solutions.
The main objective is to showcase effective models of citizen participation, promote the scalability of initiatives, and influence policy to encourage replicable and scalable civic technology projects and transformative citizen-led actions across the African continent. The Fund will provide support to initiatives that visibly contribute to Agenda 2063, Africa’s blueprint and master plan for achieving inclusive and sustainable development. The ultimate goal is to transform Africa into a global powerhouse in the future.

Successful applicants of the grant will be granted up to €15000 in financial assistance to scale and expedite their civic-tech projects and initiatives.
Funding applications must align with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 – a comprehensive blueprint and strategic plan to achieve inclusive and sustainable development. This competition is open to local organizations and projects that are operating and registered within African countries.
The AUCTF’s second round offers a chance for dynamic African organizations, initiatives, and projects to make a difference. This 12-month initiative aims to scale and catalyze innovative civic tech solutions that utilize technology to drive transformative action led by citizens throughout Africa. The Fund specifically addresses the need to promote meaningful citizen participation in governance by utilizing data and digital technologies to tackle governance and development challenges. Additionally, it recognizes the crucial role of Africa’s youth in shaping the continent’s future.

What We Fund
Our funding is dedicated to supporting organizations operating within the civic space in African Union Member States. We place particular emphasis on initiatives led by youth and women. Additionally, we are open to providing support to businesses that are strongly committed to promoting civic participation.
Financial Support
We provide financial support through multiple rounds that focus on specific geographic and thematic areas. Successful applicants will receive grants of up to €15,000 to expand and enhance their projects. These grants can be utilized to scale and develop existing initiatives.
Capacity Support
In addition to financial support, we offer a comprehensive capacity support program tailored to the unique needs of selected initiatives. This program includes workshops facilitated by experienced technologists and data scientists, operational guidance, masterclasses, and mentorship sessions. We aim to provide the necessary technical assistance to help initiatives thrive and succeed.
Why Apply for the African Union Civic Tech Fund 2.0
Successful applicants of the grant call will be granted financial support of up to €15000 to expand and expedite their projects and initiatives. The AUCTF has the capacity to support a maximum of 15 organizations and initiatives. Once the funding is received, the second cohort will undergo capacity building and technical assistance, which encompasses training sessions aimed at improving digital literacy, fostering inclusivity and diversity within initiatives, implementing stakeholder engagement approaches, and formulating advocacy strategies to impact local policies.
Eligibility for the African Union Civic Tech Fund 2.0
- The Fund is primarily foreseen for small organisations and initiatives registered in any African Union Member States.
- However, if your organisation is not yet registered, consider partnering with a registered African organisation to ensure the funds can be disbursed to a registered entity.
You will not be eligible for funding if you are a:
- Previous AUCTF beneficiary
- International, non-African entity (i.e. cannot be subsidiary of a global org)
- Non-registered entity
- Corporation, Government, etc.
- Blacklisted entity or individual
- If you are not a registered entity, you may partner with a registered entity to qualify for funding.
