Applications are open for the 2026 Microsoft Research Fellowship, a program that connects academic scholars—faculty, PhD students, and postdocs—with Microsoft Research to tackle open scientific and technological challenges that drive innovation and benefit society.

The fellowship fosters collaboration between academia and Microsoft’s global research teams, combining deep academic expertise with real-world application to advance responsible and interdisciplinary innovation.

Benefits

Fellows receive funding to support research activities and collaboration opportunities such as workshops, working sessions, and travel to Microsoft Research labs. Funding varies by region:

  • Africa, India, Australia & New Zealand, Latin America, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan – $17,000 USD

  • Europe – $27,000 USD

  • Canada, United States – $47,000 USD

Funds, which include travel support, will be disbursed in March/April 2026.

Eligibility


Applicants must be affiliated with degree-granting institutions in Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Canada, Europe, India, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, or the United States.

  • Students: Must be enrolled in a PhD program at an accredited university in an eligible region.

  • Faculty: Must hold a terminal degree (e.g., PhD, DSc) and identify a student collaborator; both will be recognized as Fellows if selected.

  • Postdocs: Must have departmental or faculty advisor approval to participate.

  • Call for proposals: November 4, 2025

  • Submission deadline: December 2, 2025,
