Applications now open for the ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024 ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals. This program is designed to offer hands-on experience to young professionals in the early and middle stages of their careers in academia, public service, or international development. Participants will gain exposure and learning opportunities in a diverse UN environment, contributing to the work of ECA.

The ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals will also allow candidates to become familiar with the Commission’s various programs and services for member States and subregional bodies, addressing the economic and social aspects of Africa’s development priorities. This experience is expected to enhance their skills, capabilities, and intellectual acumen.

ECA, as a leading knowledge institution in Africa, is committed to empowering talented young Africans through skills development, training, and mentorship within its work program. This ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals initiative aligns with the Commission’s goal of helping member States enhance their capacities in economic and social policy research, development, implementation, analysis, governance, and monitoring and evaluation.

The ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals aims to cultivate a new generation of African intellectuals with robust policymaking expertise to support the continent’s economic and social transformation and development.

Qualifications: ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals

– Education: A Master’s Degree or Doctorate in economics, development studies, political economy, international affairs, political and social sciences, peace and human security, public administration, law, minerals and natural resources, engineering, business administration, or a related field is necessary.

– Experience: Academic research or work related to the focus thematic areas is essential. Experience in research/analytical work in socio-economic and political development, natural resource management/law, regional integration, infrastructure development, governance, peace, and related areas in the context of Africa, in academia, private, public, or civil society organizations, is advantageous.

– Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in either language is required for the fellowship advertised, with a working knowledge of the other language being desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is beneficial.

Conditions for the ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals

1. The applicant must be 35 years old or younger at the time of applying for the fellowship.
2. The applicant must be a citizen of a member State of the Economic Commission for Africa.
3. The applicant must have completed a master’s or doctorate degree program, or its equivalent, before July 1, 2024.
4. The applicant should have an interest in one or more of the specified thematic areas.
5. The selected fellow will be assigned a project aimed at contributing to the work program of the mentoring Division, Sub-Regional Office, or ECA Centers, as well as other activities.
6. The selected fellow must attend national, regional, or international meetings as required for exposure.
7. The selected fellow must present a peer-reviewed research paper at a seminar upon completion of the assignment.
8. The selected fellow will become a member of the ECA Fellows alumni association and the international development “community of practice.”

Logistics: ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals

– Fellows must be willing to travel to the designated duty station chosen by ECA.
– Fellows will be provided with a round-trip air ticket between their home country and the duty station.
– Fellows recruited from outside the duty station will receive a settling-in grant of USD 3,000 and a monthly stipend of USD 3,000 for the duration of the fellowship. The final month’s stipend will only be paid upon submission of required documents and proof of departure from the duty station.

A fellowship research paper that has undergone peer review, a thorough fellowship report, an officially approved final performance evaluation of the fellow, a completed evaluation form for the fellowship program, and an exit boarding pass or immigration stamp indicating the fellow’s departure from the duty station and return to their home country, all of which are distinct, mark the conclusion of the fellowship program. The ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals, initially set for six months, has the possibility of extension for an additional six months.
