Award Components – Barry & Marie Lipman Family Prize

Each year, the Lipman Family Prize selects three winners. The grand prize winning organization receives a $250,000 unrestricted cash award, and the two additional winning organizations each receive a $150,000 unrestricted cash award.

In addition, all three winners receive the same non-monetary benefits including:

1. A continuous collaboration with the University focused on sharing knowledge and providing support to the organization, offering access to resources and connections to enhance the growth and sustainability of the organization.

2. Showcasing their achievements and projects to a wide range of individuals, as well as building connections within the Lipman Prize community of awardees and the larger Penn network.

3. Enrollment in complimentary executive education courses at the Wharton Executive Education and the Center for Social Impact Strategy, with an estimated value of $15,000.

4. The prestigious Lipman Nonprofit Leadership Scholarship, awarded in collaboration with the University’s School of Public Policy and Practice, with an approximate value of $10,000.

Eligibility – Barry & Marie Lipman Family Prize

The Lipman Family Prize is designed for organizations that tackle globally significant issues typically addressed by the Nonprofit/NGO/Civil Society sector. Consequently, the majority of applicants are classified as “nonprofit” organizations. To be eligible to apply for the Prize, organizations must meet the following criteria:

– Registered as a nonprofit in the United States or have a similar incorporation status in their home country.
– Have been in operation for at least three years.
– Have been monitoring and evaluating their work for at least three years and have results to present.
– Maintain a 3-year average of annual organizational expenses ranging from $500,000 to $5M* USD.
– Not have direct lobbying expenses to influence legislation or elections (e.g. 501(c)4); programs with religious content; or programs that discriminate based on race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, or disability.
*The budget size eligibility criterion has been revised for the 2024 Prize. Please refer to the FAQ page for more details.

Application Process – Barry & Marie Lipman Family Prize

We hold great admiration for individuals driving innovative solutions to combat poverty and inequality globally. Each submission for the Lipman Family Prize undergoes a thorough and meticulous review process.

Our application process is divided into four key stages: submission and evaluation, due diligence, winner selection, and partnership establishment. All applications are carefully assessed by University of Pennsylvania staff and faculty. Applicants will receive notification in September regarding their status in the selection process. The winners, including the grand prize recipient, will be announced in April. A special award ceremony and related events will be organized at the University of Pennsylvania for the grand prize winner and the two other winning organizations.

Admission Requirements – Barry & Marie Lipman Family Prize

1. Candidates seeking admission to the master’s degree in Nonprofit Leadership Program at the School of Social Policy & Practice must satisfy the following conditions:

– Possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university worldwide.
– Demonstrate a high grade point average (GPA) to showcase strong academic capabilities and furnish official transcripts from all previously attended institutions (including community colleges and other degree programs).
– (Not mandatory for AY 2020-2021) Attain competitive scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or have a minimum of 3 years of experience in nonprofit or social impact organizations. The Institutional Code for GRE scores is 2926, with the Department Code being 5001. Alternatively, we also consider scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) as indicators of essential analytical skills, although we prefer GRE scores.
– For international candidates whose native language is not English, a TOEFL exam is obligatory. TOEFL scores should meet the standards for advanced graduate studies, with a minimum requirement of 100 (maximum score being 120). The Institutional Code for TOEFL scores is 2926, and the Department Code is 95.
– Submit three (3) robust letters of recommendation, with at least one professional and one academic reference being preferable.
– Fill out the online application for admission, including the requisite application essay.
