UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development is now accepting applications

The UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development was established in 2008 with the aim of supporting the improvement of teaching and learning quality in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, which is a key priority for UNESCO.

This prestigious Prize is awarded every two years and is generously supported by the Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Distinguished Academic Performance (Hamdan Foundation).

The Hamdan Foundation, founded in 1998 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance of the United Arab Emirates, focuses on promoting educational excellence and supporting giftedness and innovation. Its goal is to enhance educational performance at all levels and sectors, recognizing the efforts of various groups and authorities in the education sector, as well as individuals who have achieved outstanding accomplishments and made significant contributions.

The Prize carries a total amount of US $300,000, which is equally divided among three winners whose projects aim to improve the performance and effectiveness of teachers worldwide.

Nomination Procedure:

UNESCO Member States can nominate up to 5 candidates through their National Commissions to UNESCO, while Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in official partnership with UNESCO can also make nominations. Self-nominations are not accepted.

For National Commissions, the nomination letter should be drafted by the President or Secretary General of the National Commission. As for NGOs in official partnership with UNESCO, the nomination letter should be drafted by the President or Director-General at headquarters. If the NGO has branches, the Head of the branch may draft the nomination letter, but it should be accompanied by a communication confirming that the candidate’s nomination has been approved by the executive leadership at headquarters.

Selection Criteria:

Candidates’ project submissions should have made a significant impact on improving teaching and learning, aligning with UNESCO’s principles and objectives in this field. The criteria for selection include:

1. Demonstrating innovation to promote the quality and effectiveness of teaching.
2. Creating teaching materials or special aids that foster innovative teaching and learning.
3. Mobilizing initiatives and resources that contribute to enhancing teaching quality and effectiveness.
4. Strengthening coordination and research to support and improve teacher quality.

Timeline:

– Online application submission: January 31, 2024.
– International Jury meeting: May-June 2024.
– Award ceremony and announcement of laureates: October 2024, on World Teachers’ Day.
