The Secretary-General’s Global Call Campaign for UN field missions nominations aims to broaden and diversify the pool of Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (SRSGs), Deputy Special Representatives of the Secretary-General (DSRSGs), and Special Envoys in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions. The Secretary-General is seeking outstanding leaders who possess the necessary expertise, competencies, skills, values, and behaviors to effectively lead the United Nations’ intricate missions in the field.
Criteria for the UN Secretary-General’s Global Call Campaign
for UN Field Missions
To meet the demands of these mission leadership positions, the United Nations requires individuals who meet the following criteria:
1. A minimum of 20 years of relevant professional experience, including at least 5 years at a senior and representational level, in areas such as conflict, post-conflict, peacekeeping operations, special political missions, peacebuilding, development settings, inclusive governance, mediation, facilitation, and negotiations at the national and/or international level.
2. Demonstrated extensive knowledge in areas such as reconciliation, conflict resolution, humanitarian efforts, peace operations/special political missions, development, human rights, rule of law, and governance issues.
3. Proven leadership experience with a strategic vision and the ability to effectively lead complex organizations, including intergovernmental, governmental, international non-governmental, or multinational private sector entities.
4. Demonstrated experience in senior-level management and the ability to efficiently allocate the organization’s financial and human resources.
5. Demonstrated ability in communication and advocacy, engaging with various media outlets, civil society, and digital platforms;
6. Demonstrated track record in building partnerships at local, national, or regional levels to enhance peace and security efforts;
7. Proven dedication to advancing gender equality and Women, Peace, and Security initiatives through transformative actions in both the workplace and mandate implementation;
8. Proven capability to collaborate in a diverse team, promoting inclusivity and respect for all team members regardless of identity;
9. Proven skill in establishing effective relationships within and outside the organization;
10. Knowledge of the United Nations system, including peace operations, special political missions, and humanitarian and development contexts, as well as understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals;
English and French are the official languages of the United Nations. Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory for senior leadership roles. Proficiency in another UN language, particularly Arabic and French, is advantageous for this Call for Nominations due to the deployment areas of UN field missions.
