The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program is now accepting applications.
If you are a citizen of a developing country and have a strong background in supporting your country’s development efforts, this program is for you. We are looking for individuals who are applying to a master’s degree program in a development-related field.

We are pleased to offer scholarships for 52 Participating Master’s Programs in 27 prestigious universities across the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. These programs cover various key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management.

Please note that if you are not admitted to one of these 52 Participating Master’s Programs, you will not be eligible to apply for a JJ/WBGSP Scholarship in 2024.

To be eligible for this program, you must meet certain requirements. Firstly, you must be a national of a developing country that is a member of the World Bank. Secondly, you should not hold dual citizenship of any developed country. Additionally, you must be in good health and hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date.

Furthermore, you must be employed in a development-related role in a full-time paid position at the time of submitting your scholarship application. You should have at least 3 years of paid development-related employment since earning your bachelor’s degree, acquired within the past 6 years from the date of the application deadline.

Lastly, before the scholarship application deadline, you must have received unconditional admission (except for funding) to at least one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master’s programs located outside of your country of citizenship and country of residence.

Scholarship Benefits

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship offers a range of benefits to its recipients. Firstly, it covers economy class air travel between your home country and the host university at the beginning and end of your study program. Not only that, but scholars will also receive a travel allowance of US $500 for each trip.

In addition to travel, the scholarship covers tuition for your graduate program and provides basic medical insurance obtained through the university. This ensures that you can focus on your studies without worrying about these expenses.

During the scholarship period, while you are on campus, you will receive a monthly subsistence allowance. This allowance is designed to cover all your living expenses, including accommodations, food, and even books. The amount of the allowance may vary depending on the host country, but it is intended to provide you with the necessary support.

It’s important to note that all JJ/WBGSP scholarships cover the duration of the graduate program or two years, whichever is less. This ensures that you have the necessary financial support throughout your studies.

However, there are certain expenses that the scholarship does not cover. These include visa application costs, expenses for bringing or supporting family members, extra-curricular courses or training, and courses that do not meet the minimum credit requirements for the graduate degree. Language training not provided by the graduate program, additional travel during the study program, expenses related to research or supplementary educational materials, field trips, workshops/seminars, internships, and educational equipment such as computers are also not covered. Additionally, the resident permit fee is not included.

To apply for the scholarship, you need to submit one completed application electronically through the online application site. Please make sure to submit your application by the specified deadline, which is February 29, 2024, for Window 1 programs only. Your application will be considered complete if it includes all the necessary information and documents.

a. Two letters of recommendation, which should be submitted online, are required from individuals who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s professional work experience. These letters play a crucial role in assessing the applicant’s qualifications and potential for success in the program.

b. In addition to the recommendation letters, applicants must complete the Application Form. This form can be written in either English or the language of their master’s degree program. However, it is important to note that if an applicant is seeking a scholarship to attend a preferred university in the United Kingdom, the Application Form must be written in English.

The Application Form includes various sections where applicants need to provide important information. This includes uploading scanned copies of relevant documents such as proof of meeting the eligibility requirement in terms of recent development-related work experience. The FAQs section provides detailed information on the specific documentation required.

Furthermore, applicants must also upload their Bachelor’s degree diploma and, if applicable, the diploma of their most advanced graduate degree. It is important to note that transcripts should not be included or substituted for the diplomas.

Another important requirement is the submission of a comprehensive CV using the provided format in Annex 4. The CV should be written in either English or the language of the master’s degree program for which the applicant is seeking funding. If the applicant has unpaid work experience, it should be listed under a separate category called “Volunteer Work” in the CV.

Lastly, applicants must provide an unconditional Letter of Admission for the upcoming academic year to a participating master’s program listed on the JJ/WBGSP website. This program should be the one for which the applicant is seeking funding, and it should be located outside of the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence. Annex 5 provides further clarification on what is meant by an “unconditional” Letter of Admission.
