Open call for renewable energy innovators for Pacific Island Countries-focused projects grant funding up to £200,000 per project
PREO, the Powering Renewable Energy Opportunities programme, has recently announced an open call for grant funding of up to £200,000 to support productive use of renewable energy (PURE) enterprises in Pacific Island Countries-focused projects.
Proposals are being sought for initiatives to be implemented in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu, with a focus on innovative PURE business models spanning various sectors. While locally-led projects are preferred, applicants from outside the region may apply as long as they have a local partner or office in one of the target countries.
Successful projects must be tailored to local needs and must aim to enhance the commercial viability of a PURE product or service. This includes activities such as agriculture, commerce, and industry that generate revenue and are powered by renewable energy sources.

- PREO’s objective is to assist businesses in utilizing renewable energy to enhance profits, enhance climate adaptability, and decrease dependence on fossil fuels.
- Since 2019, it has allocated more than £5 million in grant funding to initiatives throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
- PREO receives backing from the organization IKEA Foundation and UK aid through the Transforming Energy Access platform and delivered by the Carbon Trust and Mercy Corps – Energy 4 Impact.

A maximum of 8 projects will be chosen to receive funding in this current cycle, with grant amounts ranging from £50,000 to £200,000 per project.
