Nordic Africa Institute Claude Ake Visiting Chair Scholarships for African Researchers (Funded to Sweden)

The Claude Ake Visiting Chair Programme is a prestigious initiative that aims to pay tribute to the memory of Professor Claude Ake. It extends an invitation to esteemed senior scholars who possess professorial competence on a global scale. This programme specifically caters to social scientists from African universities who are passionate advocates of social justice and specialize in various areas such as war, peace, conflict resolution, human rights, democracy, and development. Scholars who are granted the Chair will not only have the opportunity to pursue their own research but also actively contribute to the ongoing activities at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research of Uppsala University and the Nordic Africa Institute.

As part of the benefits, the awardee will receive a tax-free stipend/scholarship of 30,000 SEK per month. However, if the awardee is absent from Uppsala for reasons unrelated to the programme, deductions will be made to the stipend/scholarship. Additionally, the grant covers the travel expenses and accommodation for the Chair holder. The holder will also be provided with office space at both the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the Nordic Africa Institute, along with basic office equipment.

Application Procedure

To apply for the Nordic Africa Institute Claude Ake Visiting Chair Scholarships 2024, please ensure that your application contains the following documents:

1. A comprehensive and up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) that includes relevant information about your academic title, current and previous positions, research and teaching activities, and a list of publications. Please also provide all relevant contact information.

2. A brief abstract of the research project that you intend to carry out as a visiting chair holder.

3. A research proposal that outlines the main features of your research project during the visit, including the expected results. The length of the proposal should be between 3 to 5 pages.

4. Two of your publications that are most significant to the research project you plan to pursue during the visit.

5. A signed recommendation letter from a senior scholar or policymaker who works in the same field as you.

6. A signed letter from the Head of Department or Dean (or equivalent) of your institution, confirming their support for your application.
