Job Description: Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer at Save The Children International
The Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer will provide assistance to the GPE refugee education team and offer technical support to guide and inform gender disability-inclusive programming in Cross-River, Benue, and Adamawa states. Additionally, they will support implementing partners in Akwa-Ibom and Taraba states.
Their role will involve mainstreaming gender and disability as cross-cutting themes in all programmatic activities. They will ensure that gender and disability are integrated into the results-based management frameworks, strengthen disability inclusion, apply gender equality strategies, and facilitate gender equality capacity strengthening for field teams and partner organizations of SCI through training and tool development.
Working under the guidance of the Programme Manager, the Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer will ensure that gender issues identified in the proposal are addressed. They will also ensure that activities are responsive to the needs of girls, boys, men, and women, and that all materials and trainings are inclusive.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer at Save The Children International
Program Implementation, Coordination & Management:
1. Take the lead in providing capacity building for GPE staff and partner organizations on gender and disability inclusion. This includes developing initiatives to create a gender-responsive and inclusive learning environment for girls, boys, and other marginalized children in the project states.
2. Utilize gender analysis to guide advocacy efforts in identifying and supporting stakeholders in developing mechanisms to address policy and system barriers to girls’ education.
3. Coordinate project activities between different thematic areas and other implementing partners.
4. Conduct regular gender analysis, support community mapping, and safety audits to identify and address access and financial barriers to girls’ education in the states.
5. Collaborate with the program team to formulate key gender messages and targets based on lessons learned, assessments, research, and evidence gained through project implementation.
6. Contribute to the development and implementation of GPE objectives and initiatives, considering a wide range of issues with a gender lens, both in the short and long term.
7. Acquire information and understanding of key gender issues in the country, particularly in the project states, focusing on boys and girls. This includes topics such as gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH), and adapt strategies as necessary.
8. Ensure a strong focus on gender equality, gender mainstreaming, and disability inclusion in all components of project implementation.
9. Develop and facilitate gender and disability inclusion components in training materials, needs assessments, and other project tools and resources.
10. Ensure the accessibility of gender-responsive information, education, and communication (IEC) materials developed for the project.
11. Support SCI and partners in identifying and addressing the intersectionality of gender and disability in project planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
12. Perform any other tasks as required to ensure the smooth running of the organization.
MEAL
Support the monitoring and evaluation of gender and disability-inclusive as well as disability-specific project indicators.
Assist the MEAL team in collecting, analyzing, and reporting disability data.
Ensure the involvement of beneficiaries with disabilities in project implementation, evaluation, and learning through consultations.
Collaborate with the MEAL team to compile and share regular reports on project disability inclusion.
Human Resources Management and Development:
Collaborate with the GPE Team to identify the learning and development needs of project teams and create tailored plans to address these needs.
Internal and external engagements:
- Establish and nurture a network of external contacts with key individuals in the state, NGO sector, civil society, and media, particularly those focusing on gender issues.
- Participate in gender working group meetings and provide oversight as needed.
- Engage relevant gender and disability stakeholders at the State level to support project cycle management.
Safeguarding:
- Ensure that the gender aspect of the project aligns with Save the Children’s safeguarding policies.
- Work with the project safeguarding officer to conduct safeguarding risk assessments and implement mitigation measures for all gender and inclusion activities.
Qualifications: Gender and Disability Inclusion Officer at Save The Children International
- a first degree in social science, gender and development, development studies, or a comparable mix of applicable education and experience.
- Having an advanced degree will be beneficial.
- at least five years of experience working in development, humanitarian, or refugee settings addressing gender and inclusion problems, particularly teenage sexual and reproductive health.
- a track record of providing help for the development, implementation, and assessment of gender-transformative, disability-inclusive social and behavior change communication initiatives.
- expertise in assisting with the use of gender-transformative and disability-inclusive strategies in any setting.
- Ability to operate both independently and cooperatively under minimal supervision in a team environment.
- Experience educating children and other community members about gender equality concerns is desirable, as is specific knowledge of international development, disability inclusion, and gender equality issues.
- a clear comprehension of how to apply the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities’ principles to project cycle management.
- Outstanding organizational and planning abilities, as well as the capacity to multitask in a hectic work setting
