ISHR Human Rights Defenders Advocacy Training Program for Human Rights Defenders (Scholarships Available) 2024

ISHR is excited to announce the launch of the call for applications for the 2024 edition of the Human Rights Defender Advocacy Programme (HRDAP). Building on the success of the hybrid programme introduced in 2023, the upcoming edition will once again offer participants the opportunity to engage both remotely and in Geneva.

Before applying, it is important for you to take note of the following dates:

• Mandatory distance learning course: 8 April – 3 June 2024 (part-time)
• In-person course in Geneva: 5-15 June 2024 (full-time)

The HRDAP aims to equip human rights defenders with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively integrate the UN human rights system into their work at the national level. By strategically utilizing this system, participants will be empowered to advocate for change within their respective contexts.

Throughout the 10-week hybrid learning programme, participants will have access to various resources and opportunities, including:

1. HRDAP Platform: This online platform will provide access to e-learning courses on key UN human rights mechanisms and advocacy strategies. Additionally, participants can engage with interactive learning materials and case studies available on the ISHR Academy.
2. Live Q&A Sessions: Human rights experts will conduct live Q&A sessions, allowing participants to directly interact and seek clarification on relevant topics.
3. Continuous Advocacy Support: Participants will receive ongoing support and coaching to develop concrete advocacy objectives. This guidance will enable them to effectively utilize the international human rights system to advance their causes.
4. Networking Opportunities: The programme offers a unique chance to build networks with fellow human rights defenders from different regions. Participants can learn from their peers’ experiences and gain insights into various human rights issues.
5. Case-Study Scenarios: Participants will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical case-study scenarios. This exercise will enhance their advocacy toolbox, tailored to their specific needs.
6. Support during Human Rights Council Sessions: Participants will receive support and advocacy accompaniment to engage in activities during the 56th and 57th Human Rights Council sessions, as well as other relevant opportunities.

By participating in the HRDAP, defenders will not only gain valuable knowledge and skills but also have the chance to put them into practice while in Geneva. This blended format allows participants to continue their important work on the ground while immersing themselves in the inner workings of key UN human rights mechanisms. Furthermore, they will have the opportunity to connect with peers and experts, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

In Geneva, participants will have a unique opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills, practice, meet peers and experts, and engage strategically in the international human rights space.

The blended format of the course allows defenders to continue their vital work on the ground while gaining first-hand experience from advocates and UN staff on the inner workings of each key UN human rights mechanism.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available, with full scholarships covering the entire cost of 5000 CHF and partial scholarships covering the 2000 CHF tuition fee. However, participants may need to secure funding for stable and reliable internet access throughout the duration of the distance learning course.
