Ghent University is offering Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries to study in Belgium (Funded)

Ghent University with support from BOF offers PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries. These scholarships allow students to conduct half of their research at Ghent University and the other half at a university in a developing country. Ghent University provides funding for the research conducted at their institution for a period of 24 months. However, the candidate must secure full-time funding for the remaining 24 months of research to be carried out in the developing country.

Eligibility

• To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must be from one of the selected developing countries and hold the nationality of that country. See list
• The proposals for the scholarship must be jointly submitted by the candidate, a supervisor at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university in the developing country.
• There are no restrictions on the field of research, but preference will be given to topics that are relevant for development.
• Only degree students who intend to obtain a joint PhD degree at Ghent University can apply for this scholarship. Exchange students are not eligible.
• This program is designed for students at the beginning of their PhD journey.
• However, to a limited extent, PhD students who have already completed preliminary research are allowed to apply.
• At the start of the fellowship, which is on October 1, 2024, the candidate must still have a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research remaining to complete the PhD.
• Ghent University aims to encourage more female researchers to apply for this scholarship. Therefore, a Ghent University supervisor can support a maximum of two candidates per call, as long as they are of different genders.

Funding

• The funding provided by Ghent University includes a PhD scholarship for a total of 24 months.
• The Ghent University promoter also receives a bench fee of €310 per month for the research conducted in Ghent.
• Additionally, there is an €8,000 travel budget to cover operational costs and part of the travel expenses for the student, as well as both the Ghent University and local promoters.
