Entries open for the ITET Gem essay competition: Transforming Nigeria into an Economic Powerhouse

The theme for this year’s ITET Gem essay competition is “Transforming Nigeria into an Economic Powerhouse: My Ideas for Today and Vision for the Future”. Essays must be between 500 and 750 words, and should outline the young applicant’s perspective on Nigeria’s current economic situation, their aspirations for a thriving Nigerian economy, suggestions for addressing present economic challenges, and the role they are prepared to play in realizing their ideas and visions.

Prizes and Rewards for Winners of the ITET Gem Essay Competition

  • First prize: N150,000.00
  • Second prize: N100,000.0
  • Third prize: N50,000.00

Use of Prize Money

  1. Prizes are designated for educational expenses, such as exam registration fees, and cannot be used for any other purpose.
  2. Applicants placing fourth to tenth will receive an Honourable Mention without any monetary prize, but will have the chance to participate in the ITET Gem Scholars Programme as one of the top 10 finalists.
  3. The ITET Gem Scholars Programme offers various benefits, including participation in the ITET Gem Foundation’s Mentorship Initiative. This initiative pairs students with experienced mentors who work in fields relevant to the students’ career interests.
  4. Additionally, participants will have exclusive access to special events, resources, training, information, and other opportunities not available to the general public. Mentors and Resource Persons in the programme are seasoned professionals with successful careers, possessing the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to guide students towards achieving their educational and career objectives.

Eligibility Requirements for the ITET Gem Essay Competition:

To qualify for the ITET Gem Essay Competition, you must:
– Be a Nigerian citizen residing in Nigeria.
– Be under 18 years of age when submitting your essay.
– Have a reachable phone contact, which doesn’t necessarily have to be yours but should belong to someone who can easily reach you.
– Possess an email address (not necessarily your own) and be capable of submitting the essay via email.
– Be enrolled as a senior secondary school 2 or 3 student in a recognized institution.
Entries from public school students are encouraged, although students from private schools are also eligible to participate.

How to Apply for the ITET Gem Essay Competition

To participate in the ITET Gem Essay Competition, you must write an essay of 500 to 750 words on the topic “Making Nigeria an Economic Powerhouse: My Ideas for Today and Vision for the Future.” Your essay should cover the young applicant’s perspective on Nigeria’s current economic situation, their vision for a prosperous Nigeria, suggestions for addressing economic challenges, and the role they are willing to play in achieving these goals. Please send your essays via email to [email protected] before the deadline on 24th June 2024. Entries submitted through other means will not be considered.

The submission must also include the following information listed in the following order:

  • Full name (Surname first)
  • Gender
  • Date of Birth (Day-Month-Year)
  • State of Residence
  • Local Government of Residence
  • Name and address of the school you attend
  • Current Class
  • Awards Received (leave blank if none)
  • Any Leadership Positions or Responsibilities Held (leave blank if none)
  • Phone number through which you may be contacted (including name and relationship of owner if phone number is not owned by you)
  • Full name and phone number of a teacher in your school who can attest to your character
  • Full name and phone number of a religious or community leader who knows you and can attest to your character
  • Full name and phone number of a parent or guardian who has given consent for you to enter the essay competition.
  • These additional details do not count towards the word limit.
  • Entries that do not include the aforementioned information will not be considered valid. Additionally, we recommend that you inform the named teacher and community leader as a gesture of courtesy, regarding their inclusion in your submission.
  • All entries received prior to the deadline and from eligible applicants will undergo a thorough review. Shortlisted applicants will be contacted within a maximum of four (4) weeks following the application deadline.
