Entries open for McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program
Applications are currently being accepted for the 2025/2026 McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program. This initiative at McGill University is designed for exceptional leaders and innovators at the graduate (master’s) level from Sub-Saharan Africa, who are committed to enhancing and transforming the fields of nutrition, public health, public policy, and sustainable agriculture throughout the continent.
Eligibility Criteria – McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program
Candidates must meet the academic requirements for admission to McGill University and fulfill the following minimum criteria:
– Be eligible for one of the designated programs at McGill University.
– Have NEVER enrolled in or completed a master’s degree.
– Be a citizen of and reside in a Sub-Saharan African country (please refer to the list of eligible countries).
– Possess a valid passport and qualify for entry into Canada as an International Student (which necessitates a Study Permit). Individuals with dual citizenship, asylee, refugee, or permanent resident status in the US, Canada, UK, or EU are not eligible.
– Exhibit an outstanding record of service, leadership, and involvement in their school and/or community.
– Show a commitment to contributing to their home community.
– Be under 35 years of age at the time of application.
Candidates possessing First Class Honors or an equivalent qualification are more likely to gain admission.
Eligible Programs – McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program
All applicants, irrespective of their country of origin or educational background, must:
– Hold a bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent recognized by McGill University) in a field closely related to the chosen graduate program.
– Ensure that their bachelor’s degree satisfies equivalency standards. Candidates with First Class Honors or an equivalent qualification are more likely to gain admission.
– Meeting the minimum requirements for graduate admissions does not ensure eligibility for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program or admission to McGill University. Please refer to each program page for any additional requirements.
Selection Process – McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program
The selection process for applications is based on the following criteria:
– The academic merit of the candidate that qualifies for admission to McGill University.
– A demonstrated history as a transformative leader and a person of service within their community.
– The quality of the application in alignment with the Mastercard Foundation ethos and the values of the McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
– The potential impact on the development of the applicant’s home country.
– Consideration for applicants who have encountered significant barriers to education, whether social, financial, personal, practical, or health-related.
Steps for Application – McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program
Assess your eligibility criteria.
Fill out the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form*.
After your application undergoes pre-screening, submit any additional documents as requested by the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program team.
Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening will receive an invitation to apply to McGill University. Those who are accepted will be granted a fee waiver and provided with comprehensive instructions for the admission process at McGill.
*It is essential to apply to the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program initially. Only after successful pre-screening will you be invited to pursue your selected program of study through the McGill admissions procedure.
