Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa Scholarships

Applications are currently open for the 2025/2026 Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica) Scholarships. The European Union (EU), through its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, has allocated funding to facilitate the training of graduate students at African universities as part of the “Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica)” initiative.

This project is a mobility program that includes six African Partner Institutions alongside one EU Technical Partner. The CREATE-GreenAfrica consortium is led by the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM, Tanzania) and comprises Mekelle University (MU, Ethiopia), Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU, Zimbabwe), University of Free State (UFS, South Africa), University of Ghana (UG, Ghana), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT, Nigeria), and the European Technical Partner, University of Southern Denmark (SDU, Denmark). The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance climate-related skills and qualifications throughout Africa by promoting mobility and the exchange of experiences.

The Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica) Scholarships project will play a crucial role in enhancing the knowledge and competencies of students, trainees, consortium staff, and other individuals outside the consortium regarding climate change adaptation and mitigation. It emphasizes the inclusion of women, girls, and disadvantaged groups across the African continent, particularly within the consortium.

A total of 35 Master’s degrees and 12 Doctorates will be awarded from 2024 to 2028 in the following thematic areas:

1. i) Environmental Sustainability, focusing on impact assessment, adaptation, and mitigation strategies for climate variability and change;
2. ii) Climate and weather-related processes at both local and global scales to enhance forecasting, prediction, and early warning systems;
3. iii) The resilience of food production systems in response to the impacts of climate change and variability;
4. iv) The intersection of gender, climate, and food systems, along with relevant policies and institutions concerning climate and development;
5. v) The relationship between climate change and water resources;
6. vi) Collective action, natural resource management, and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies to climate change.
7. The initiative will offer scholarships for full degree programs as well as short-term credit-seeking mobility opportunities for students.

Eligibility – Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica) Scholarships

The scholarships are available to all qualified African candidates who are residing in Africa at the time of application and will be trained at host institutions in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Note: Applicants may only apply to study at institutions outside their home country. Female candidates and those from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. All applications will be treated with confidentiality.

Benefits – Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica) Scholarships

1. The scholarship offers a monthly subsistence allowance of €1230 for PhD candidates and €890 for M.Sc. candidates. This financial support is intended to cover expenses related to research, travel, travel insurance, living costs, and accommodation.
2. Insurance coverage, including accident, travel, and health insurance, will be provided throughout the duration of the scholarship, adhering to the stipulations of the grant.
3. Additionally, the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scholarship Scheme, CREATE-GreenAfrica, will finance various costs such as tuition fees, application fees, student union fees, registration fees, caution money, student ID fees, and quality assurance fees, in accordance with the memorandum of understanding established between the partner institutions and the European Union.

Selection Criteria – Climate Research and Education to Advancing Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica) Scholarships

The selection process for students eligible to benefit from the CREATE-GreenAfrica project will involve eight distinct steps.

1. The coordinating institution will collect applications and transmit them to the designated host university, which will then create a shortlist of candidates.
2. The coordinator will receive the list of shortlisted candidates from the host institution.
3. The CREATE-GreenAfrica selection committee will evaluate the shortlisted candidates and make decisions regarding the awarding of scholarships, taking into account eligibility, the authenticity of academic documents, and qualifications for admission as determined by the host university.
4. The coordinator will communicate the results to the applicants, scholarship recipients, and host institutions.
5. The CREATE-GreenAfrica selection committee may conduct further reviews in response to any appeals concerning the selection process.
6. Contracts will be signed between CREATE-GreenAfrica and the scholarship recipients, with the signed contracts subsequently sent to the host universities.
7. The host university will assist with the travel arrangements and accommodation for the awardees, and will assign an academic mentor to support them in successfully completing their studies.
8. Awarded candidates will be responsible for the cost of their airfare to the host institution, which will be reimbursed along with any direct expenses incurred during the admission process upon their arrival at the host institution.
