The call for nominations for the prestigious 2024 Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize for Emerging Young Leaders is now open! Do you know a young leader who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting or defending democracy? If so, it’s time to nominate them for the second edition of the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize. The Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize has three main objectives. Firstly, it aims to recognize and celebrate the outstanding intellectual and practical leadership displayed by young activists who have dedicated themselves to defending, promoting, or revitalizing democracy. Secondly, the prize provides the recipient with valuable support, including a one-year mentorship program with a renowned democracy expert or senior leader. Lastly, it strives to inspire and encourage young individuals to commit themselves to the advancement of democracy.

Requirements

  •  Nominations must be submitted by an organization,
  • The nominees must be between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of nomination.
  • There are no restrictions based on nationality, gender, or occupation. So, if you know someone who fits the bill, don’t hesitate to put their name forward!

Benefits

  •  The recipient will receive a monetary prize of USD 10,000.
  • Additionally, the award ceremony will take place at the esteemed Athens Democracy Forum, and all travel and accommodation expenses related to the Awardee’s participation will be fully covered by the organizers.
  • Furthermore, the Awardee will be given the opportunity to play a leading role in organizing a panel session on youth and democracy at the following year’s Forum.

Nomination Requirements:

To be eligible for the Kofi Annan NextGen Democracy Prize, nominees must be between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of nomination. There are no restrictions based on nationality, gender, or occupation. The Selection Committee will carefully consider the following criteria when determining the winner:

1. Impact: The nominee’s actions must have had a tangible outcome, such as influencing policy changes in a specific country, increasing voter participation, reaching a large number of people through a campaign, or promoting democratic values among students or community associations.

2. Innovation: The innovative nature of the nominee’s actions will be taken into account. The committee is looking for fresh and creative approaches to advancing democracy and human rights.

3. Sustainability: The committee will assess whether the nominee has made a lasting impact on democracy and human rights for a minimum period of one year. They will also consider whether the actions taken by the nominee can be replicated in different contexts over time.

4. Values: The nominee’s actions should reflect strong values that align with the principles of democracy and human rights.

5. Benefit: The committee will consider the potential international recognition and support that the Award could bring to the nominee.

How to Submit a Nomination:

Nominations must be submitted by an organization, and the nominee must be between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of nomination. If you represent an organization, please send your completed nomination to [email protected] before midnight CET on March 31, 2024.

Your nomination must include the following:

1. Completed Submission Form
2. A Cover Letter of support (maximum 500 words)
3. A short video testimony from the nominee (maximum 2 minutes, can be recorded on a smartphone)
