Call for entries: World Press Institute Fellowship Program for Journalists (Funded to USA)
Every year, a large number of professional journalists from all over the world apply for the limited 10 World Press Institute fellowship positions. The chosen finalists are a representation of the finest journalists in their respective countries. They possess a natural curiosity, intelligence, and ambition, and approach journalism with a strong sense of dedication and responsibility.
Becoming a WPI Fellow is a highly competitive process. Talented journalists from various backgrounds and experiences apply each year for the 10 fellowship slots. A selection committee, consisting of seasoned journalists and corporate communications specialists with international expertise, carefully selects the most outstanding candidates.
Requirements
- To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must have at least five years of full-time employment in print, broadcast, or online journalism.
- This includes working in news or editorial departments of newspapers, wire services, radio, television, websites, or online publications.
- Photojournalists, editorial cartoonists, columnists, and broadcast producers are also eligible.
- Supervisors of journalists can apply if they have at least five years of experience as a working journalist.
- Journalism-related work completed as a university student does not count towards the required experience.
- Individuals working in public relations or organizations whose primary business is not the media are not eligible.
- Applicants must be currently employed as non-U.S. journalists working outside of the United States.
- Fluency in both written and spoken English is essential, as it is the primary language of the program.
- The potential for leadership is also considered during the selection process.
Benefits
- WPI covers the program expenses for the fellows, including transportation.
- This includes roundtrip airfare to the United States and travel within the country related to the WPI program.
- Lodging is also provided.
- Fellows receive a modest daily allowance to purchase food, but they are responsible for personal expenses such as phone bills, camera equipment, postage, and clothing.

- WPI Fellows are expected to adhere to the terms of the fellowship.
- Any violations of these terms may result in termination from the program.
- Please make sure to attend all briefings and scheduled events organized by WPI.
- It is important to stay for the entire duration of the program and return to your home country once it concludes.
- As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to write for the WPI website and other assigned outlets. We also encourage you to share your experiences with your readers, listeners, or viewers back home.
- Your participation in periodic reviews and evaluations, including roundtable discussions, will provide valuable insights into journalism issues in the U.S. and internationally.
- It is crucial to have an open mind and accept others from different cultures.
- Please note that the program locations change frequently, so be prepared to travel and live out of suitcases.
