African Liberty, established in 2007 as a collaboration between the Cato Institute, IMANI Africa, and the Atlas Network, is dedicated to advancing individual freedom, peace, and prosperity in Africa. We focus on fostering civil discussions and debates on social, legal, economic, and global issues that impact Africans.
We are committed to identifying and nurturing young African advocates for freedom, providing them with training in critical writing and assisting them in launching careers in journalism and public policy. Through partnerships with Africa-focused think tanks and media outlets, we aim to elevate the quality of discussions among Africans and between Africa and the global community. Our network of young writers, researchers, and commentators covers a wide range of topics including human rights, free expression, economic development, technology, criminal justice, entrepreneurship, and more.
African Liberty operates as an independent editorial platform supported by African Students For Liberty (ASFL).
About the African Liberty Writing Fellowship
The African Liberty Writing Fellowship program is currently accepting applications for its 2023 – 2024 cohort. This year-long program aims to equip young Africans interested in academia, media, public policy, or other critical writing careers with the skills needed for opinion article writing. Successful applicants will undergo a mandatory five-week online course, with the top performers being selected as African Liberty Writing Fellows.
African Liberty has provided opportunities for fellows to be featured in prominent African and international media outlets.

FAQs on the African Liberty Writing Fellowship
1. Is this a paid fellowship? This is a paid fellowship. Compensation is contingent upon a monthly assessment. Please beware that we do not consider financial compensation until a fellow is inducted.
2. How competitive is the program? We received approximately 1600 applications in 2022/2023 with 50 invited to the 5-week training. We inducted 25 as writing fellows.
3. Do you accept applications for senior fellowships? No.
4. What qualifications do I need? An applicant has to be enrolled in, or must have graduated from, an African institution of higher learning. Or, be an African pursuing higher education outside the continent.
5. When does the program start and end? 5-week training runs from 21 May 2024 to 18 June 2024. The writing fellowship starts on July 8, 2024, and ends on July 8, 2025.
6. Where is the program taken? The program, from the 5-week training to the last day of the writing fellowship, is done entirely online.
7. Is there an application fee? No

9. What is SFL? It is an abbreviation for Students For Liberty; African Liberty is a project of SFL.
