About the Climate Leadership Fellowship
Climate change has had devastating effects on the world, particularly in Nigeria where it has caused drought, desertification, flooding, and disruptions in rainfall patterns. These impacts have had negative consequences on human health, well-being, and the environment.
Agricultural productivity has suffered, leading to increased poverty rates in the northern regions, while the southern regions have experienced extreme flooding and the spread of diseases through contaminated water sources. Recognizing the urgent need for action, Climate Smart Nigeria, in collaboration with the Glow initiative for Economic Empowerment and with support from Access Bank PLC, is investing in a new generation of young energy leaders to drive the transition towards clean energy and climate action in Nigeria.
The Climate Leadership Fellowship, tailored specifically for Energy Leaders, aims to equip fellows with expert training in clean cooking, clean energy, solar power, and waste-to-energy sectors, focusing on the concepts and applications of renewable energy for a more sustainable climate.
Following the training, fellows will be assigned to Adopt a School, where they will educate students on climate change and renewable energy, nurturing a new generation of climate-conscious individuals who will contribute to building a climate-resilient nation. Each fellow will receive a climate education toolkit for teaching purposes in schools, as well as a certificate of climate leadership.
Benefits of the Climate Leadership Fellowship program
1. Deliver professional training on climate change advocacy in connection with the transition to clean energy and leadership to advance national climate resilience.
2. Introduce young individuals to the diverse opportunities available in the renewable energy industry.
3. Establish Green Clubs in two hundred secondary schools across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
4. Provide training and guidance to two hundred young Nigerians as educators on climate change within a year.
5. Educate 20,000 secondary school students as climate champions through the Adopt a School program and Teach climate change in the first year.
6. Offer internships and practical work experience to trained climate advocates through the Adopt a School initiative.
7. Invest in and promote a climate-resilient energy sector.
8. Construct two hundred sustainable and climate-smart schools across the six geopolitical zones.
Goal
• Within a year, the CLF aims to train 20,000 secondary school students and mentor 200 climate educators.
• We aim to train 140,000 students as climate champions and 1,400 climate educators in the next seven years.
Climate Leadership Fellowship Program Outline
- The program offers a three-week intensive expert training on climate change for selected fellows.
- Each week, there will be an expert live class as part of the course block.
- Upon completion of the training, fellows will receive a climate education toolkit and be trained on how to utilize it.
- Subsequently, fellows will be assigned to Adopt a School, where they will educate students on climate change using the toolkit for a period of four weeks.
- They will also introduce a climate data policy in the schools and communities they are working in, as well as on social media.
- Additionally, fellows will establish climate change leadership clubs in the schools they are assigned to.
- They are encouraged to showcase innovation within the school community by executing small climate change projects to reinforce their teaching, which includes implementing the climate data policy.
- Finally, the top 5 fellows will be honored with the Climate Champion Award.
Climate Leadership Fellowship Participants are expected to:
- Dedicate 5 hours every week to the professional training and live calls.
- Take on a school and finish the four-week program on teaching climate change in schools.
- Show creativity during the school adoption process.
Climate Leadership Fellowship Eligibility
- Youth aged (22 – 35)
- Graduated from University
- Its OK if you’re not a part of an organization
- Demonstrated leadership for climate change and renewable energy
- Passion to promote awareness for climate change
- Selected applicants should be available and willing to teach climate change within their communities using provided toolkit, participate in the climate leadership expert training, submit a fellowship workplan and be available for all virtual meetings.
- Part of a growing environmental/renewable energy organization or involved/interested in a renewable energy business (serving Corp members with interest in renewable energy can apply)
