The Network of Excellence for Land Governance in Africa (NELGA), in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), is delighted to announce the 2024 Research Fellowship. This program presents a distinctive opportunity for scholars and professionals affiliated with NELGA partner institutions to conduct research that tackles the vital nexus of climate change and land governance.
The 2024 fellowship emphasizes the empowerment of African researchers to investigate critical topics such as African food systems, pastoralism, digitalization, and gender dynamics in land rights. It aims to enhance the academic and practical connections necessary for effective land policy reforms throughout Africa.
Eligible Applicants – NELGA – DAAD Research Fellowship in Climate Change and Land Governance
The organizers encourage staff members or students from NELGA partner institutions with expertise in land governance or a related discipline to apply for funding for NELGA research fellowships. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
– Hold at least a first university degree (undergraduate) from a recognized higher education institution;
– Be enrolled or employed at one of the NELGA partner universities or affiliated institutions;
– Commit to returning to their studies or duty station upon completion of the fellowship;
– Be citizens of an African nation;
– Obtain a leave of absence from their home institution to conduct field research.
Eligible Fields – NELGA – DAAD Research Fellowship in Climate Change and Land Governance
Applicants should possess a background in land governance, land management, or a related area (such as land administration, land economics, urban and regional planning, or geomatics). Proposals addressing the following cross-cutting themes will receive particular attention within the realm of Climate Change and Land Governance:
– African Food Systems and Land Governance
– Pastoralism, Livestock, and Land Rights in Africa
– Digitalization and Land Rights in Africa
– Gender and Land Rights in Africa.
Duration – NELGA – DAAD Research Fellowship in Climate Change and Land Governance
The fellowships are available for a duration ranging from one to three months, contingent upon the specific project and the applicant’s schedule. Only complete months are eligible for funding. The fellowship is not subject to renewal.
Value
The fellowship includes:
a fixed travel allowance: EUR 280 for domestic travel, EUR 430 for neighboring countries, EUR 630 for regional travel, and EUR 980 for travel outside the region;
a monthly research stipend of EUR 460.
Documents to be submitted
DAAD application form, properly completed (accessible via the DAAD-Portal);
Curriculum Vitae, including a list of publications (if relevant);
a comprehensive description of the research proposal along with a summary of previous research endeavors (maximum of 10 pages);
a weekly plan outlining the intended research activities;
a letter from an academic supervisor at the host institution, referencing the applicant’s proposal and confirming the provision of a workspace (not applicable for studies in the field);
copies of university diplomas/certificates and transcripts for all annual academic assessments (including an explanation of the grading system);
a recent recommendation from a university instructor detailing the applicant’s qualifications.
