The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT provides academic-year fellowships to 10 science journalists from all over the world. This program offers a unique opportunity for journalists to delve into the realms of science, technology, and journalism. Fellows have the chance to specialize in a specific area of science and learn from some of the most prestigious research universities globally.

During their time in Cambridge, fellows will work on a journalism-related research project that takes advantage of the abundant resources and connections available at MIT and in the greater Boston area. Previous fellows have utilized this time to conduct in-depth research for narratives or story series, create multimedia projects, explore book proposals, and gain expertise in new scientific fields. Regular meetings are held to provide guidance and support for these projects. At the end of the academic year, fellows present formal presentations on their projects, which often go on to be published as articles, books, videos, or podcasts.

Benefits

In addition to the invaluable learning experience, fellows receive a stipend of $85,000, paid out over 9.5 months.
They also receive a relocation allowance and basic health insurance for themselves and their families.

Eligibility

The program is open to journalists from all countries, and applicants are evaluated based on their professional excellence, accomplishments, and dedication to their craft.
All journalists are encouraged to apply and compete on an equal basis.
To be considered for the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship, applicants must be full-time journalists, whether on staff or freelance.
Part-time writers or producers are not eligible.
Additionally, applicants must have at least three consecutive years of experience covering science, health, technology, and environmental reporting. This includes work as reporters, writers, editors, producers, illustrators, filmmakers, or photojournalists for newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and digital media.
Applicants must not have completed a fellowship of four months or longer during the two years prior to applying for the fellowship. If selected, fellows must reside full-time in the Boston/Cambridge area for the MIT academic year, which runs from mid-August to May.
They must also attend field trips, seminars, and required training sessions arranged by the Knight Science Journalism Fellowship Program, and develop a course of study that includes at least one science course per semester.
During the fellowship, fellows must refrain from outside paid professional work unless written permission has been granted by the director.
Finally, fellows must produce a well-thought-out research project during the academic year.
