Apply for the EUI STG Policy Leader Fellowship for Early & mid-career professionals (Funded to Italy with €2,500 Monthly Grant)

This program, situated within one of Europe’s most prestigious academic institutions, offers participants an exclusive insider’s perspective into the EU policy-making processes. Unlike other programs, the PLF does not require an academic background but instead seeks individuals with diverse hands-on experiences in policymaking from around the world.

By being part of the PLF, fellows not only gain direct access to the STG and the EUI faculty and researcher community but also have the opportunity to learn from their fellow participants, forming lasting professional and personal connections.

During their five or ten-month stay at the STG, fellows work on developing policy recommendations and practical solutions for pressing transnational issues, drawing inspiration and insights from their own work experiences. Additionally, they have the chance to attend professional skills trainings and actively engage in the academic life and activities of the EUI, further enriching their fellowship project.

Eligibility

• To be eligible for the PLF, applicants should be mid-career professionals with a minimum of ten years of solid professional experience and demonstrate the potential for future excellence in their respective policy areas.
• Candidates with a strictly academic profile are typically not considered.
• The ideal candidates are self-motivated, driven, and capable of independently accomplishing the activities outlined in the fellowship work plan.
• They should also possess an open-minded and curious mindset, willing to engage in peer discussions on topics that may extend beyond their area of expertise.

Duration

The PLF offers two options for the duration of the fellowship: five months or ten months. Candidates can indicate their preference between

• September 2024 and January 2025 for the five-month option, or
• between September 2024 and June 2025 for the ten-month option.

RESIDENCE
Fellows are required to reside in Florence for the entire duration of their Fellowship in order to actively participate in the activities of the EUI/STG and the fellowship program. While short visits outside of Florence and Italy are allowed, the fellowship cannot be carried out remotely or online.

GRANT
The monthly grant amount is €2,500.

Successful applicants who receive other grants or salaries must inform the EUI about it. Depending on the amount of additional income, the fellowship amount will be adjusted to a lower rate (minimum €1,750 per month) and relevant supporting documents need to be provided.

If applicable, family allowances will be added to the basic grant (details below).

FAMILY ALLOWANCES
If a Fellow has a partner living with them in Florence and the partner’s income is less than €2,000 per month, a household allowance of up to €300 per month will be paid. The total income and allowance cannot exceed €2,000 per month (for example, if the income is more than €1,700, the allowance will only be paid to top up to €2,000).

An allowance of €200 per month is paid for each dependent child.

TRAVEL EXPENSES
Fellows (excluding their families) will be reimbursed for their travel expenses from their place of origin to Florence at the beginning of the fellowship, and from Florence to their destination at the end of the fellowship.

Reimbursement is provided for first-class rail travel (car travel is also reimbursed based on this basis) or economy class airfare.

Required Documents:

1. Curriculum Vitae (CV) – Please ensure that your CV does not exceed 3 pages in length. This document should provide a comprehensive overview of your educational background, work experience, skills, and achievements.

2. Short Biography – Your biography should be concise and no more than 250 words. It will serve as a brief summary of your profile during the selection process and may also be used for communication purposes if you are accepted for the fellowship.

3. Reference Letters – Two reference letters are required. Please refer to the separate section on reference letters for detailed instructions on how to submit them.

4. Copy of Highest Educational Certificate – Please include a copy of your highest educational certificate. This document will verify your academic qualifications.

5. Letter of Motivation – Your letter of motivation should not exceed 1000 words. In this document, please outline your main reasons for applying for the fellowship, highlight your objectives during the programme, and express your interest in specific transnational policy issues. Additionally, you can share your future professional aspirations.

6. Work Plan – Your work plan should be a maximum of 2500 words. It should include the project title, a short summary or abstract, the main objectives, milestones, and the related activities. This plan will provide an overview of the work you intend to undertake during the fellowship.
