Apply for: Iowa State University’s Borel Global Fellows Program for Sub-Saharan African Students ($25,000 yearly)
FellowIn 2018, the Borel Global Fellows Program was established thanks to the generous contribution of ISU alumni Jim (’78 agricultural business) and Marcia (’78 family environment) Borel.
This program aims to support students from Sub-Saharan Africa in pursuing their graduate studies at Iowa State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. By educating scientists who will become knowledge leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa, the program strives to address food and nutrition insecurity, as well as promote wealth and health for subsistence farmers in the region.
ELIGIBILITY
- To be eligible for the Borel Global Fellows Program, faculty members with a majority appointment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University can submit an application for partial graduate student funding.
- The student must be admitted into a graduate program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences,
- be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country,
- Commit to completing their graduate studies as a means of contributing to food security in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Additionally, the majority of their graduate research should be conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa,
- and they should demonstrate an intention to work and live in the region after completing their studies.
FUNDING
The program provides funding of up to $25,000 per year per student to support graduate student stipends, research funding, or a combination of both. MS students can receive funding for up to 30 months, while PhD students can receive funding for up to 42 months. Furthermore, funding for travel to and from Africa for research purposes is also available for both the student and their advisor.
Application Process
To apply for the Iowa State University’s Borel Global Fellows Program, make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. Your completed application should include a cover letter from your major professor, a CV of yourself, and a copy of your goal statement. Remember, the deadline for submission is January 15th each year.
In your cover letter, it’s important to address your major professor’s commitment to providing the remaining required funding, which usually includes tuition, fees, and research costs. Additionally, highlight their dedication to supporting your research in Sub-Saharan Africa.
