Applications open for the World Trade Organization Young Trade Leaders Programme

The 2024 World Trade Organization Young Trade Leaders Programme is currently accepting applications. This program is designed to build a global network of “Young Trade Leaders” who will enhance their understanding of the WTO’s work and international trade. Individuals aged between 18 and 30 with a keen interest in international trade are encouraged to submit their applications.

Young Trade Leaders are expected to possess a deep comprehension of how trade can positively impact both people and the planet. They will bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas regarding the role of trade and the WTO, while also having the opportunity to gain insights into the organization’s operations and contribute to advancing its mission.

Eligibility Criteria:

– Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old at the application deadline and have a strong interest in international trade.
– They must be citizens of a WTO member country.
– Applicants should not have any current affiliation with the WTO, nor have any relatives who are currently affiliated with the organization.
– Proficiency in written and spoken English is required, and knowledge of a second WTO working language (French or Spanish) is considered advantageous.
– Candidates should possess diplomatic skills, be open to diverse perspectives, demonstrate a commitment to understanding trade issues, and be willing to engage in constructive dialogue.
– Successful applicants must be dedicated to actively participating in the one-year programme from July 2024 to June 2025.

1. Young Trade Leaders who are selected will have the chance to:

– enhance their understanding of the operations of the WTO and global trade
– create and share articles, blogs, podcasts, and social media content on trade-related subjects
– participate in a one-day training session at the WTO headquarters in Geneva
– lead or coordinate a session at the Public Forum 2024
– take advantage of existing WTO training initiatives
– receive guidance and mentorship from the WTO Secretariat
– get assistance in organizing WTO-related events in their respective countries.

Selection process

1. The WTO Secretariat will assess all applications and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed in July 2024.
2. Selected leaders will not be compensated but will be given the opportunity to travel to Geneva for the 2024 WTO Public Forum in September.

2. – a CV (maximum two pages)
   – a 2-3 minute video introducing themselves, expressing their interest in the program, and discussing the impact they aim to make as a Young Trade Leader
   – a written piece (up to 300 words) responding to the question: What does trade mean to you?
3. The application deadline is 5 July 2024 .
4. Applications submitted after this date will not be considered.
