Applications open for the Goethe Institut Studio Quantum residency programme for Artists

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024 Goethe Institut Studio Quantum residency programme. This innovative program, organized by the Goethe-Institut, aims to explore the intersection of emerging quantum technologies and art through a series of international events and artist-in-residence opportunities.

The Studio Quantum residency programme and its accompanying event series will bring together artists, technology experts, scientists, and educators to facilitate an open dialogue on the subject of quantum technologies and their impact on the arts.

Building upon the success of the previous “Living in a Quantum State” project, which took place in various cities around the world, including Dublin, Berlin, London, Beijing, and San Francisco, the Studio Quantum residency programme offers artists the chance to incorporate quantum technologies into their work or explore new artistic techniques made possible by these technologies.

Requirements

• In 2024, the Studio Quantum residencies will be open to artists based in Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Nigeria, India (States of Karnataka and Kerala), and South Africa.
• One artist from each location will be selected to participate in the programme.
• Artists applying to the Studio Quantum artist-in-residence programme should have a demonstrated interest in technology and innovation, as evidenced by their previous work.
• They should also be established in their artistic practice and be eager to learn about and engage with quantum technologies.
• Additionally, artists should be motivated to collaborate with experts and partners from the cultural, educational, and tech sectors, and be willing to contribute to a global network of professionals in order to share their findings and work.
• As part of their residency, selected artists will be expected to participate in at least one event, which could take the form of an interview, presentation, or discussion. This will provide them with an opportunity to showcase their work and engage with a wider audience.
• The artists chosen must be open to taking part in or contributing to a project exhibition in Germany in November 2024.
• For artists participating in the autumn 2024 residencies, this may involve remote participation and presenting initial findings. Proficiency in English (C1+) is required.

Selected artists will have the opportunity to connect with local experts in both the cultural and technology fields, as well as a global network, through an eight-week tutorial. All artists-in-residence will be invited to take part in public events at each location and showcase their work and/or findings at a project exhibition in Germany in 2024.

Each residency will last for two months. Applicants must be willing to travel for a minimum of 4-8 weeks as part of the program. Each location will offer a unique network of project partners. Please refer to the information below:

JUNE – JULY 2024

• Dublin, Ireland – The event will be organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Irland, Trinity College Dublin, CONNECT – the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications, Project Arts Centre, and The Douglas Hyde Gallery of Contemporary Art.
• Johannesburg – South Africa The event will be organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa and local collaborators.
• Lagos, Nigeria  -The event will be organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Nigeria and local collaborators.

SEPTEMBER – DECEMBER 2024

• Karlsruhe – Germany Organized in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, ZKM, and KIT/ITAS.
• Rotterdam – Netherlands Hosted in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Netherlands, V2, and project partners.
• Bangalore – India Organized in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Bangalore and the Science Gallery Bangaluru.
• Please note: Only artists based in Germany are eligible to apply for the residency in Bangalore, India, and only artists from Karnataka and Kerala can apply for the Studio Quantum residencies.
• Mexico City, Mexico – Hosted in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Mexico and project partners.
• London, United Kingdom – Organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut London, the Science Gallery London, and the Department of Physics, King’s College London.

During their residency, artists will have the opportunity to participate in a tutorial consisting of two weekly sessions over a span of eight weeks. This tutorial will feature experts from the cultural sector and the field of quantum technologies from around the world.

In addition to the tutorial, artists are expected to independently arrange meetings or calls with experts in technology, research, and cultural organizations throughout their residency. The Goethe-Institut will provide assistance in making these connections whenever possible.

Each artist will also be involved in one event organized by the Goethe-Institut during their residency. This could include activities such as giving a talk, presenting preliminary work or approaches, participating in a local festival, or attending an interview or networking event.

For the duration of their residency, Studio Quantum artists-in-residence will receive a production budget of up to 3000 EUR, as well as coverage for travel costs, accommodation, and an honorarium. The amount allocated for travel costs will depend on the distance traveled, including luggage, transfers, and local transport.

To apply for the Studio Quantum program, artists should prepare the following documents and materials:

1. A brief proposal outlining the focus of their residency and what they hope to achieve, research, develop, or create.

2. Indicate the theme that aligns most with their proposal: Quantum technologies, sustainability and climate change; Quantum technologies and artificial intelligence; Quantum technologies, data security and data encryption; or Wildcard.

3. Provide an indication of their preferred residency location, ranking them in order of preference (e.g., 1. Lagos, 2. Karlsruhe, 3. Dublin). Artists should fill out all three locations.

4. Include a proposed production budget of up to 3000 EUR for the residency period, covering any necessary materials.

5. Submit an up-to-date C.V. that includes links to websites and previous work.
