Applications open for the Climate Change Media Partnership COP29 Reporting Fellowship by the Earth Journalism Network

Applications are currently being accepted for the COP29 Reporting Fellowship offered by the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP). Led by Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, the CCMP is excited to announce this opportunity for journalists who are interested in covering the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29). The conference will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11-22, 2024.

Since its inception in 2007, the CCMP has organized 17 iterations of this fellowship, bringing over 500 journalists from low- and middle-income countries to participate in and report on the annual UN climate talks. This has allowed journalists from all over the world to cover the climate negotiations for their respective audiences, while also benefiting from the expertise of media trainers and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the actions being taken, or not taken, by countries to address the global impact of climate change.

This year, the CCMP Reporting Fellowship aims to select up to 20 journalists from low- and middle-income countries* to attend COP29 in person and report on the proceedings. Given that Azerbaijan is hosting the climate summit this year, EJN also encourages journalists from neighboring regions with varying income levels (such as the Balkans, the Baltics, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia)* to submit their applications.

Eligibility Criteria: Climate Change Media Partnership COP29 Reporting Fellowship

To qualify for the Fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a professional journalist affiliated with an established media organization or representing one. The media house should be based in one of the countries listed below*.
2. Be available and willing to travel to Baku to attend COP29 in person. The dates for arrival and departure are November 9 and no earlier than November 24, 2024, respectively.
3. Possess a strong command of the English language.
4. Have prior experience in reporting on climate change issues. Clearly indicate the types of stories you intend to pursue regarding the conference.
5. Commit to actively participate in all Fellowship activities.
6. Submit an up-to-date resume/CV.
7. Provide a letter of support from an editor, producer, or supervisor who can verify that your news reports will be published or broadcasted by an established media outlet. Freelancers are welcome to apply but must include a letter of support from the media outlet they intend to report for.
8. Submit recent and relevant journalistic work samples on climate change topics. These can be uploaded as documents or web links. The stories can be in any language, but they must be accompanied by a brief English synopsis. The clips should primarily focus on climate change topics and have been published within the last 12 months.

CCMP Fellows selected for the program will have the opportunity to travel to Baku and attend the entire duration of the UN climate negotiations. The planned arrival date is November 9, 2024, with departure on November 24, 2024.
The CCMP will cover the costs of non-refundable economy-class airfare, accommodation, meals, travel medical insurance, and ground transportation expenses related to Fellowship participation. The organizers will also assist with the press accreditation process and provide logistical support for the trip. Please note that obtaining any necessary visas will be the responsibility of the Fellow, but the CCMP will reimburse the visa costs.
