Applications for the 2025 Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships are now available. This scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also includes a leadership program designed to challenge, develop, and connect you with other young African changemakers.
Requirements: Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships

– Citizenship of an African country
– Age between 19 and 29
– Completion of an undergraduate degree with outstanding academic performance (above 70% or upper-second class Honours) by 1 Jan 2025
Financial Support: Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship covers the essential costs related to your studies, including tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any field at a recognized South African institution. This encompasses tuition fees, registration fees, study materials, research expenses, medical aid, accommodation, meals, personal allowance, and economy class travel to and from your home country to your South African university at the beginning and end of your degree.
Leadership Development Program: Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships
Based on the principles of reconciliation, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership, the program focuses on inner transformation as the foundation of effective leadership. The Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) is dedicated to upholding Nelson Mandela’s legacy by empowering young African leaders to drive positive change across the continent. The leadership development program consists of week-long residential workshops that you will participate in during your time in residence.

- The tuition and registration fees are determined by your university or institution.
- A study materials allowance is set by the MRF.
- Accommodation and meal allowances are set by the MRF.
- A medical aid allowance is set by the MRF.
- A personal allowance is set by the MRF.
- Research and conferencing grants can be provided upon request.
- Economy-class flights are provided for international scholars from their home countries to their institutions at the beginning and end of their studies.
Schedule: Mandela Rhodes Foundation (MRF) Postgraduate Scholarships
- March: Applications open on Thursday, 14 March 2024. Candidates can add recommenders on the platform and start uploading their documentation and working on their personal essays. Refer to the ‘requirements’ section.
- April: Applications close by the end of Sunday, 21 April 2024. No late or incomplete applications will be considered.
- June: Notification of Round Two results will be sent by the end of June.
- July: Notification of Round Three results will be sent by the end of July.
- August: Notification of Final Round interview invitations or unsuccessful applications will be sent by the end of August.
- October: Interviews will be held in South Africa in October. Final round candidates based outside South Africa will be flown in for an in-person interview with the selection committee. Notification of selection as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar will be sent by the end of October.
- October-December: Selected Mandela Rhodes Scholars must secure acceptance at their chosen university and obtain a study visa for travel to South Africa in January.
