The BBC News Komla Dumor Award will be presented to an exceptional individual residing and working in Africa, who possesses strong journalism skills, on-air charisma, and a remarkable ability to narrate African stories, along with the drive and potential to become a future star.

Programme Information

The recipient of the BBC World News Komla Dumor award will have the unique opportunity to undergo training and development with the BBC in London, commencing in early September 2024 and lasting for three months. Collaborating with various teams within BBC News, the awardee will create an African story for the BBC, which will be shared across the continent and globally. They will receive guidance from a distinguished BBC mentor and participate in courses offered by the BBC Academy, known for its exceptional training programs.

Requirements

To be eligible for this esteemed award, applicants must currently be employed as journalists in Africa. Additionally, candidates must possess the following skills and qualifications:

– Proficiency in journalism, particularly in digital and social media.
– Prior experience in broadcasting is preferred.
– A captivating broadcasting persona, voice, and adept presentation skills, capable of engaging audiences both on the microphone and in front of the camera.
– The ability to conceive and propose a compelling original African story idea that aligns with BBC’s editorial standards.
– Broad and current knowledge of the African continent, encompassing politics, business, culture, history, and sports.
– Fluency in English as a first or equivalent language.

Rewards

The flight expenses to and from the UK, as well as the visa fees, will be covered by the BBC for the winner. Additionally, the BBC will make arrangements for and cover the cost of the winner’s accommodation in London throughout their placement. The winner will be granted a £7000 stipend for the duration of their three-month stay in London (taxes and deductions will be applied accordingly).

Requirements for Application

Additional prerequisites for all candidates include submitting a CV (maximum two pages), possessing or being able to acquire a passport valid until at least 31st January 2025 by 31 March 2024, and not being a current or former BBC staff member.
If selected, your employer must be willing to grant you a three-month leave starting from September 2024 to travel independently to London for your placement.
The visa necessitates holding a degree or being enrolled in a program leading to a degree equivalent to a UK Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide references, proof of employment, birth certificate, passport, a suitable UK visa, and evidence of English proficiency.
