Attention African women aspiring editors! Cassava Republic is thrilled to announce that we will be hosting a residential editorial workshop this September exclusively for African women living on the continent who are interested in editing non-fiction.

This immersive workshop will span over 10 days in September. Aspiring editors will have the incredible opportunity to acquire all the necessary skills and techniques to excel as nonfiction editors. They will have the chance to collaborate and enhance their editing abilities, culminating in the editing of a final essay that will be published in an anthology by Cassava Republic Press.

The Anthology: Cassava Republic’s African Women Non-fiction Editorial Workshop for Aspiring Women Editors

1. During the workshop, editors will work on essays for an anthology created by writers from the African Women’s Non-Fiction Writing Workshop. This anthology will revolve around the theme of Taboo, featuring a collection of essays that explore this topic from various perspectives.
2. Taboos are practices that are forbidden, restricted, and often controversial. They are influenced by social and religious customs, and differ across cultures. What does taboo mean to you? This question ignites curiosity and encourages introspection. You can choose to delve into the historical or theoretical origins of different taboos, or explore the effects of breaking an existing taboo through a journalistic lens.
3. Alternatively, if the theme resonates with your personal experiences, you can write a personal essay on navigating a taboo and the emotions involved. This theme serves as an invitation to provoke and stimulate discourse, and the anthology will serve as a testament to the allure of the forbidden.
