World Bank ICSID Internship Program provides internship opportunities for highly motivated graduate students. This presents a distinctive chance to engage with the foremost institution dedicated to the resolution of international investment disputes.

The internship program is designed for students interested in international investment dispute resolution and investment law, offering them a comprehensive insight into ICSID’s operations. It aims to enhance their academic and professional aspirations while allowing them to contribute innovative ideas and research to further ICSID’s objectives. Consequently, the Centre seeks enthusiastic and dynamic candidates capable of thriving in a collaborative environment.

The Internship
Every four months, up to six internships are available, requiring a minimum commitment of 12 weeks and at least 10 hours of work per week. The internship periods are September to December, January to April, and May to August. Internships are conducted at the Centre’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., unless COVID-related restrictions are in place.

Interns will not receive financial compensation; however, they may earn academic credit for their contributions upon successful completion of the internship or may be sponsored by their respective universities.

The Work
Interns will be assigned to either a case management team or an institutional team. Under the guidance of experienced ICSID Counsel, they will assist in case administration and various institutional projects.

Case Administration
Tasks related to case management may involve drafting working papers, conducting research, aiding in the preparation of case correspondence, organizing logistical arrangements for hearings, and attending hearings with the consent of the involved parties and the tribunal.

Institutional Matters
Interns will also engage in research on institutional issues under the supervision of the ICSID Secretary-General and Deputy Secretaries-General.

Eligibility Criteria – World Bank ICSID Internship Program

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate program. Additionally, they must provide written confirmation indicating that they will either: (i) receive academic credit for at least one term/semester in their course of study; or (ii) be granted a stipend by their university throughout the internship period.

Furthermore, candidates must possess or be able to obtain an F1 or G4 visa, or be U.S. citizens or residents (Green Card holders), and must be capable of covering their travel, accommodation, and living expenses while in Washington, D.C. ICSID also recommends that selected interns secure medical insurance for the duration of the internship.

Lastly, candidates must meet their university’s internship requirements, which may differ; therefore, students are encouraged to confirm their eligibility for a specific internship period with their university before applying.

Qualifications – World Bank ICSID Internship Program

Interns are selected on a competitive basis and must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A demonstrated interest and knowledge of investor-State dispute settlement and international investment law.
  • Rising 3L, LLM or Ph.D. Student.
  • Fluency in English and preferably in at least one of the other two official languages of ICSID (i.e., French and Spanish).
  • Ability to conduct research on a range of issues in the fields of arbitration and investment law.
  • Strong writing and legal drafting skills.
