Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge. This initiative, backed by the Google News Initiative, seeks to provide funding for projects from news publishers aimed at combating misinformation and disinformation, exploring innovative formats in mobile, video, and audio, and discovering methods to increase subscriptions while supporting various revenue streams.
This nine-month program has been developed by the JournalismAI team at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and is supported by the Google News Initiative.
The grantmaking program will empower 35 news organizations globally to experiment with and implement solutions that enhance journalistic systems and processes through the use of AI technologies. At the conclusion of the program, participating organizations will share the results of their projects and best practices regarding the application of AI technologies within the news sector.
Eligibility Requirements – Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge
Entities owned by the government or affiliated with a political party are not eligible to apply.
Applicants must possess a verifiable digital presence, such as a website primarily dedicated to journalistic content, and must have been operational with recent content for at least 12 months prior to the application call.
Applicants must be capable of launching, implementing, and assessing the impact of the grant on their organization within a maximum period of nine (9) months.
This grant is not intended for reporting or storytelling purposes, and funding should not be allocated primarily for the production of stories. Eligible proposals should utilize AI to address and develop solutions in the following thematic areas:
Combat misinformation and disinformation
Explore new formats to engage both new and existing audiences across mobile, video, and audio platforms.
Identify strategies to increase subscriptions and support diverse revenue models.
You are prepared to exchange business insights and engage in collaborative efforts with fellow grantees, while also monitoring outcomes throughout the program and providing a brief report on your performance upon its conclusion.
The Grant
Grants will be distributed as follows: Google News Initiative JournalismAI Innovation Challenge
10 projects will each receive $250,000
25 projects will each receive $50,000
