Applications are now open for the Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program

The 2024 Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program is currently accepting applications. The program, in partnership with the CFJ and its affiliated organizations, is offering fully funded fellowships to ten early-career women lawyers in sub-Saharan Africa. The goal of the Waging Justice for Women Fellowship Program is to provide African gender justice advocates with the necessary tools to challenge inequality through legal means.

The program focuses on key issues such as removing legal barriers to girls’ education, combating child marriage, promoting accountability for gender-based violence, and addressing economic discrimination and criminalization based on gender stereotypes.

Requirements: Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program

– A qualifying law degree
– Practice Certificate: Admitted to practice as a lawyer in at least one of the countries of the host organizations. Fellows must be admitted to practice as a lawyer in the respective country of their host organization of choice.
– Work experience: At least two years of post-qualification experience in the legal field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in women’s rights and working in human rights organizations.
– Citizenship or work authorization: Must be a citizen or have work authorization in Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, or Liberia. Costs related to international relocation and acquiring work authorization cannot be supported.

– Experience collaborating with survivors and/or affected communities
– Experience incorporating gender and child-sensitive perspectives into substantive tasks
– Passion for gender equality and women’s rights
– Dedication to the mission and objectives of the Clooney Foundation for Justice and relevant host organizations
– Proven ability to carry out intricate legal analysis and fact-finding
– Strong research, writing, and verbal communication skills
– Self-motivated with exceptional interpersonal and teamwork abilities
– Demonstrated commitment to social justice and human rights, with a knack for devising strategies to promote justice in our key areas
– Willingness to travel
– Fluency in English is a must; proficiency in other operational languages relevant to the host organizations’ countries is desirable

Fellowship Duration: Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program

  1. Fellowships will be full-time, one-year positions, spanning from January 2025 to December 2025.
  2. The Fellowship is on-site, and Fellows will be stationed at their host organizations. Hybrid work arrangements may be considered by the host organizations on a case-by-case basis.
  3. Given that Fellows will be distributed across Africa, the majority of the mentorship, peer networking, and training components of the program will take place online. Nonetheless, CFJ intends to arrange an in-person gathering of the cohort at least once during the Fellowship term.

Benefits of the Clooney Foundation Fellowship Program

  1.  The Waging Justice for Women Fellowship Program by CFJ will grant Fellows a local currency equivalent to a $25,000 USD gross annual salary. CFJ and/or the host organization may also cover additional travel or work expenses as deemed necessary.
  2. The Fellowship provides an annual salary and a chance to collaborate with prominent human rights organizations focusing on gender justice.
  3. Fellows will contribute to at least one strategic litigation case aimed at promoting the rights of women and girls in national, regional, or international courts or UN mechanisms.
  4. Fellows are expected to be stationed in the home country of their host organization and must possess the legal right to work in that country.
